Default How this works with a tC

I know this thread is as old as dirt. But since there was a lot of confusion on here regarding the tC, I thought id try and clear some of it up since I have firsthand knowledge now thanks to my misfortune.

This procedure WILL WORK to program the Remote Keyless Entry system of a tC. However, the Vehicle Immobilization chip inside the key and the receiver in the steering column are another story. The dealership has to program that part.
So if you buy a key off eBay and get it cut and follow these steps ... You'll end up with a remote that works fine ... a key that opens the doors and turns the ignition ... but a car that will only crank and not start.

How in the world is this helpful, you may ask? Well, there are plenty of examples. Basically if you still have the transponder chip from your old key you're good to go. You can swap it into your eBay key and you'll be set.
In my case, a dog tried to eat my key. Which left the electronics destroyed. So I got a new key, swapped the chip, got it programmed, got it cut, and I was set.

If you ever lost your key, and got your locks re-keyed .. guess what? That old lost key could still open your car unless you remove it.

You could also use this to give someone access to your car without the ability to steal it. A room mate or significant other, in case you needed them to be able to get something from your car for you.

I could go on, but you get the point. That's how this WILL and WILL NOT work for a tC. My experience was with a 2006, so don't flame me if this doesn't work for a later year.

I know most cars with transponder keys have a way to add more transponder keys if you have two good transponder keys already. I've just never found a way to do this with the Scions yet. Perhaps following a similar procedure from the Toyota Tundra might do the trick... but it's a different ECU so you never know.

OK, so I bought a switchblade key and fob from ikeyless.com for my 05 Scion xB. I had the key cut but I cant get the fob to program.
I tried these steps and it lock and unlocked as if I did the steps right but the fob isn't working.

Anyone in Delaware or Philly wanna help me out?

Default Dealer can't program my key fob

Hey, I really hope someone can help me out. I went to the Toyota dealer in Bloomington, IN, to get a key fob for used 2005 Scion xB that I bought from a used car dealer. When the key fob came in, the service guy said that he couldn't program it to my car because it has already had four key fobs programmed to it, and that is the max. The service guy said the only solution is to replace the computer (ECU?), which will cost over $700. A little high for a key fob. Does anyone have anything to suggest?

Default remotes

if you follow the procedure and do two on/off, on/off at the end it will clear all remotes from the system and then let you program the ones that you have. There is also a way the dealer can clear all remotes and then add the ones that you have through the OBD port with a OBD2 scanner/programmer.
They are trying to sell you a new ECU. Don't let them, go to another dealer if you can or call Toyota directly and file a complaint. You can also get into the ECU programming with a laptop hooked up through the OBD port under the dash. Good Luck.

I thought the dealship in Bloomington, IN, was shooting me a line of bull, so I tried the dealership in Jasper, IN. They told me the same thing: A 2005 Scion xB can only have four key fobs associated with the computer. The only work around is to replace the computer. I went to an after-market shop and got two key fobs for a little more than one key fob would have cost -- if the dealships could have gotten it to work without a $700 computer.

If you look at the original post you will see that "Rewrite mode" allows you to erase old fobs before you add new ones.

There are four different modes you can use to program remote door lock functions.

Confirmation mode allows you to check the number of transmitters recorded.
Add mode allows you to add a transmitter without disturbing existing transmitters.
Rewrite mode allows you to replace all existing transmitters with new ones.
Prohibition mode erases all transmitters and turns off the remote door lock function.

Confirmation mode. To check for the number of remotes programmed into the car:

Start with the key out of the car, driver's door open and unlocked.

1.Insert key in ignition and pull out
2. Within 5 seconds, insert the key in the ignition and pull out again.
3. Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert and remove the key from the ignition again.
4. Within 40 more seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert the key in the ignition and close the driver's door.
5. Turn ignition switch from LOCK to ON to OFF three times, leaving the key on for one second and off for one second each time.
6. Remove the key from the ignition lock.

The doors will lock and unlock themselves at about 2 second intervals. The number of times that the doors lock is the number of remotes that are programmed into the car. If the car locks/unlocks 5 times, there are no codes registered.

Add mode. To add a remote without disturbing existing remotes:

Start with the key out of the car, driver's door open and unlocked.

1.Insert key in ignition and pull out
2. Within 5 seconds, insert the key in the ignition and pull out again.
3. Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert and remove the key from the ignition again.
4. Within 40 more seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert the key in the ignition and close the driver's door.
5. Turn ignition switch from LOCK to ON to OFF, leaving the key on for one second and off for one second.
6. Remove the key from the ignition lock.

The doors will lock and unlock themselves once.

7. Within 40 seconds, press the lock and unlock buttons on the transmitter at the same time and release.
8. Within 3 seconds, press either switch and release.

The doors will lock and unlock themselves once if the registration was successful. They will lock and unlock twice if the registration failed.

9. If you have other remotes to program, go back to step 7 within 40 seconds.
10. Insert the key in the ignition or open a door to complete registration.

Rewrite mode: To erase all remotes and add new ones:

Start with the key out of the car, driver's door open and unlocked.

1.Insert key in ignition and pull out
2. Within 5 seconds, insert the key in the ignition and pull out again.
3. Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert and remove the key from the ignition again.
4. Within 40 more seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert the key in the ignition and close the driver's door.
5. Turn ignition switch from LOCK to ON to OFF twice, leaving the key on for one second and off for one second each time.
6. Remove the key from the ignition lock.

The doors will lock and unlock themselves twice, indicating that you are in rewrite mode.

Prohibition mode: To erase all codes and disable wireless door lock function:

Start with the key out of the car, driver's door open and unlocked.

1.Insert key in ignition and pull out
2. Within 5 seconds, insert the key in the ignition and pull out again.
3. Within 40 seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert and remove the key from the ignition again.
4. Within 40 more seconds, close and open the driver's door twice, then insert the key in the ignition and close the driver's door.
5. Turn ignition switch from LOCK to ON to OFF five times, leaving the key on for one second and off for one second each time.
6. Remove the key from the ignition lock.

The doors will lock and unlock themselves 5 times at about 1 second intervals.

However, the Royal Toyota in Bloomington, IN, and Uebelhor Toyota in Jasper, IN, both said it was impossible without a new computer, which would cost around $700.

Royal Toyota was going to charge me $179.10 and had the (one) key fob in their hands, but couldn't get the job done. Ziebart charged me $164.99, got the job done and gave me two key fobs.

Seemed pretty straight forward to me.

Got a used 05 xB and ordered these two key fobs on ebay http://www.ebay.com/itm/181220982275...84.m1439.l2649

I was hoping that I would be able to program them myself using these instructions despite the eBay description saying I needed a locksmith. I went through all the steps to rewrite and even just add and the doors unlock and locked twice but I got NO response when pushing the key fob lock/unlock at the same time and the pushing the lock OR lock button within 3 seconds.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bret, those are the remotes for the 2008 and newer xB2, not the original 2004-2006.5 xB Classic. The remotes you are looking for look like this:

If it is recognizing the fob then the programming is correct. You either have an problem in the fob or in the car. Do you have another fob that works correctly? If so, the problem is in the new fob. If the other fob doesn't work correctly then the problem is with the car circuitry.

As with anything, try these at your own risk. If you accidently reprogram your engine to produce 200HP don't blame me!

Where are the places people are buying Fobs from? Is ebay the only real place to look? I wouldn't mind trying to get a new fob if they were available and affordable though.
