Another GT86 Rally Car is in Development?
I don’t know whether to jump for joy or cry. It was just announced that independent of the GT86 CS-R3 that Toyota’s TMG department is making, the race shop owned by Tommi Makinen is building a full on WRC GT86 with Akio Toyoda’s blessing. That means AWD.
In a test that is supposed to happen today in Finland, Akio himself will be there to witness the test mule take the dirt, and knowing what I know about Akio, he will most likely try to get some seat time. Apparently, things haven’t been going well between Toyota and TMG in relation to the rally cars and Toyoda is looking into other avenues to get back into WRC.
I’m not sure about creating a AWD GT86, sure it could be super cool, but what makes the 86 awesome is that it’s RWD. I’d honestly rather see the TMG version then an AWD one, although a WRC 86 prepped by the legendary Makinen would be pretty awesome. I wonder if they just put a modified WRX platform in the car. Toyota and Subaru have been adamant that it wouldn’t fit; we will just have to wait and see. Hopefully we get some spy shots soon.
