Scion C-HR Won’t Debut in Detroit, But Don’t Worry Yuccies, It Is Coming

A few weeks back, Car and Driver boldly stated that Toyota would be putting the Scion C-HR concept into production, and that the new model would be debuting next week at the Detroit auto show.

They were wrong. And Toyota was kind enough to let C&D know as much:

“Toyota’s North American reps have reached out to us to say this isn’t happening. The C-HR is coming—it seems we’ll just have to wait a bit longer to see the final production version.”

So yeah, maybe C&D jumped the gun a bit, but the really important part of that sentence is that the C-HR is indeed coming. Which is important because Scion could really use a new product to tout. And it certainly helps that the new product falls into one of the hottest segments around: the crossover SUV.

If you’ll recall, Toyota first showed off the C-HR as a Toyota design study at the 2014 Paris auto show. Early on in 2015, they displayed it as a four-door concept in Frankfurt, again badged as the Toyota C-HR, only this time closer to production ready. They yet again paraded the concept at the L.A. show, only this time with a Scion badge.

Toyota will yet again be showing the Scion C-HR at the Detroit show next week. Here’s how Scion’s press kit is advertising it:

Among the 11 vehicles on display including the iM, iA and tC, Scion will show the CHR concept for the first time since its world debut last November. The CHR concept features an iconic design that incorporates functionality and sporty performance. The model targets young urban creatives, or “yuccies,” who desire vehicles that are distinctive, sophisticated, passionate and clean. The production version is expected to be shown later this year.

Yuccies will surely enjoy the fact that the new compact SUV will be built upon the same platform as the new Prius, Toyota’s New Global Architecture (TNGA). Yuccies will probably have a choice between the 1.8-liter hybrid engine in the Prius, or the 1.2 liter turbocharged gas sipper sourced from the big-in-Japan Auris.

So, what do you think? Is this the new product Yuccies need?
