How the FR-S Should Already Come: With Three Times the Horsepower

It’s fair to say I’m particularly attached to my own FR-S. In fact, I love it to pieces. However, like many others, I feel that the platform could use an extra shot of horsepower to bump up the sportiness. And it can definitely be done, but unfortunately both Scion and Subaru are unwilling to grant our wishes with a turbo version of the car.

Thankfully, the aftermarket is here to help. Unlike many of the other engine swap stories we’ve featured, mostly involving some form of 2JZ swap, this article features a refreshingly American twist in its quest for more horsepower.

This car was built by the same shop that built Formula D star, Fredric Aasbo’s tC: Papadakis Racing. The team could have done the norm, either switch it with an LS, or swap a 2JZ into it, but they wanted something more. They wanted a new Coyote motor.

The engine, supplied by Ford Racing, is the Boss 302 Aluminator XS crate motor that’s good for 500+ horsepower. However, this is not a missile car build. The car still has all the comforts that the stock car had including A/C, heat, seats, radio, and a full interior. But now she has three times the horsepower as stock, and that’s really how it should have always been, right?

I know Toyota and Subaru’s goal was to build a cheap, lightweight sports car that could be handled by the masses. However, a little bit more oomph would go a long way, just ask the team from Papadakis Racing.
