Future of the FR-S: Sedan or Wagon?

So, the convertible is dead in the water. Depending on how you feel about convertibles, that might be either a good thing or a bad thing. Still the evidence is there that the car is successful. They should do something with it right?

As I see it there are two choices that might actually make it out of the gate. The first is the idea of a sedan. Stretching the platform of the FR-S and adding two doors adds some practicality that is lost on the coupe. Also a longer wheel base makes for a more stable car in general. If they decided to go this route, I think the Toyobaru would be more attractive to a much wider audience. Namely, people who think coupes are inconvenient. Yes, it would add weight, but that can be offset with a different boxer engine. Personally, I feel they should name it something else if they were to go this route they should call it something else… The letters tC come to mind.

Then there’s this thing. This awesome pipe dream of a car. Subaru calls it the Cross Sport Concept, which is stupid, because CLEARLY it’s a BRZ wagon. Extending the roof line and adding a hatch does a few things which could work out in the real world. It offers actual trunk space in contrast to the lunch box the normal Toyobaru has in the back. You get more room in the rear seating area too; that’s good news for people with legs. Also, the seats fold down giving you a coupe with cavernous capacity.

I think Subaru and Toyota are probably going to shoot on one of these ideas. I think the wagon is the choice that makes the most sense from a utilitarian point of view, but I think the general populous might be more interested in a sedan.
