Gatebil Rudskogen: Where Drifting Injects its Steroids
The Japanese may be the progenitors of drifting, but the Scandinavians are pushing the limits of what the sport can be with their premier drifting battle: the Breisladd competition at Norway’s Gatebil Rudskogen.
This year’s Breisladd winner was Fredric Aasbø driving a Toyota 86x with 750 hp. He was 2013’s comeback kid after mechanical troubles kept him out of last year’s event. For next year, he’s wanting much more than 750 hp, and plans on propelling his Toyota with an 1,100-hp 2JZ stroked to 3.4 liters. With that much power, one ponders whether his tires will last one whole run.
The Breisladd competition is a simple two-corner run at Rudskogen Motorpark, but what differentiates this event is its all-inclusiveness — search the world over and you’ll find no other drift meet that allows all-wheel drive to compete against rear-wheel drive; this is what makes the Breisladd battle, and its surrounding weekend, Europe’s hottest track-day festival.
Anything can happen at Gatebil Rudskogen. In addition to the racing, it is three insanity-filled days of after-track concerts, wet T-shirt contests, muddy wet T-shirt contests, heck, even marriage proposals.
Proposing to your girl in the eye of a tire-smoke storm: Is there a more petrolheaded way to pop the question? I’d like to see you come up with one.
As you can see, she said “yes”.
