IIHS Small Overlap Crash Test: 2014 Scion tC Results — Acceptable
Refreshed for the 2014 model year, the Scion tC has undergone the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s newest and most stringent small overlap crash test. Added to the IIHS’s testing regimen in 2012, the small offset crash test runs 25 percent of a car’s front end into a solid barrier to simulate a collision with a tree, utility pole, or impact into the corner of another vehicle. The IIHS says its small offset test simulates crashes that account for almost a quarter of front impacts that result in injury or death to front-seat occupants.
Our favorite part about this testing is seeing companies respond when their cars get a poor to marginal rating. The Volkswagen Beetle got a “marginal” — VW responded by touting how their cars exceed all federal safety standards … that’s like saying a parachute exceeds all standards for jumping out of a grounded airplane. The Chevrolet Cruze and Sonic also received “marginal” ratings. In response, GM said they are working on improving their cars. At least GM was cool when they found out. Other car companies should follow GM’s example if crash test results are less than acceptable.
