Scion Axes Turbo and Convertible FR-S
We can all have a collective sigh together because the next bit of news is quite sad and depressing. According to the Senior Vice President of Scion, we will be getting neither a turbo nor convertible version of our beloved FR-S.
Over the last few years the FR-S has been in production, Scion has whipped together concepts and rumors faster than a turbo could spool. We had the much loved FR-S Open Concept, and the very often rumored turbo FR-S. Neither though is in the cards. Speaking with Wards Auto, Doug Murtha stated that both were DOA.
Toyota and Subaru just couldn’t make the business case to build either. Murtha stated that while the turbo version was just a rumor and that it’s “not something that’s coming,” they fought tooth and nail for the Open Concept to see production.
Cancelling the one, and not entertaining the other seems very shortsighted for the companies. The FR-S is nearing its mid-cycle, and sales are starting to plummet. Without some much-needed spice injected into the little sports coupe, it will be very hard for the company to continue making a good business case for the car’s production.
Murtha did state that in order to keep the car fresh, the company is expecting more limited edition models like the Series 1.0 we got a few months ago. However, for the moment, that’s all they are expecting. What do you all think, can the FR-S survive if nothing is changed besides a few body bits?
