Scion FR-S Convertible Still Under Consideration
Last week we told you the FR-S convertible project had been scrapped. We even had you sit down in preparation for a sinking heart. Perhaps now you can find a clear area to jump for joy because Toyota 86 Chief Engineer, Tetsuya Tada told CarAdvice the Toyota 86 convertible was still being considered for production. One can only hope that means the roadster will come to the United States as a Scion.
We’re getting more clarity on why there is so much confusion with the convertible’s fate. Apparently the ZN6/ZC6 cars are a victim of their own success. CarAdvice says demand is so high for the 86 model line, adding a variant would only complicate operations for an already burdened factory. This demand issue is a major factor in the convertible’s business case. To give an example of ZN6/ZC6 popularity, we’ve seen waiting lists as long as four months for the FR-S and eight months for the BRZ.
Because of this, we won’t hold our breath for a Scion FR-S convertible, but Tada said another open-top concept is coming. Expect to see it in November at the Tokyo Motor Show.
