Since the Subaru BRZ and the Scion FR-S debuted a few years ago, many journalists and consumers have been inundating Toyota and Subaru with letters to stick a turbo onto the Toyobaru twins’ engine. The car just always lacked enough power to keep tuners and consumers happy, including the one that’s writing this very article.

I myself have an FR-S and I too think it’s underpowered. And after a year and a half of ownership, the FR-S is going away for a brand new Golf R. However, Subaru might have just thrown a wrench in my plans in the form of the new BRZ STI concept.

Now here’s the big takeaway: it’s not turbo-charged. Rather, the engine has been plucked out of the Subaru BRZ Super GT300 car that races in Japan. That means a naturally aspirated four cylinder boxer motor that makes 450 horsepower. That’s definitely a step in the right direction.

Added to that power increase, Subaru threw every STI part it could think of at the car. Front and rear diffusers, big wing, big brakes, revised interior. All the things everyone’s been asking for, and really everything the car needs.

Here’s the bad news. Subaru has made it perfectly clear that this is just a concept and not a production car. Although they said that this is what a production STI might look like, if it were ever to get green lit. However, don’t hold your breath.
