'89 Mitsubishi Mirage Hatch 4G63'ed
One of my good friends is selling his car and I'm really thinking about purchasing it, possibily today. I wanted to hear some different opinions about it before I do. I drove it yesterday, it is VERY fast. This car is actually quite rare, there were only 1,500 of them produced in the US.
It is a hideous car (sorry, I couldn't find a picture anywhere on google), and it's also not in good condition on the outside. (front bumper is a little lose, the suspension sucks, and it has a little bit of rush in the rear quarter panel) I'm not too worried about that, it's just going to be a track car, I'm planning on still keeping my tC. It will not be a daily driver by any means.
The car has a 4G63 (2.0 DOHC) engine from a '92 TSi FWD with 60,000 miles. Normally the car comes with a 1.9 4G61 (1.9 non-turbo engine) so the 2.0 fits in there very well.. It's a nicely done swap.
It has a T3/T4 60trim running 22psi, MBC, FMIC, different ECU (e-prong or something like that), 660 injectors, ACT 2900 clutch, LSD, and flywheel.
The inside it completely gutted, just 2 seats in it, that's pretty much it.
Stock the car weighs 2,400lbs., It's down to about 2,100-2,200 now.
It has ran a 7.2 (unsure of the trap speed) in the 1/8th with slicks. and has hit a 11.6 in the quarter with a 2.5 60' (going realll easy off the line).. the car feels insane from a roll, 2 days ago I witnessed the car beat a E55 AMG mercedes from a 15 & 60mph roll. The car has also beat a srt-10 viper from a 60mph roll by several car lengths.
He said it's mine for $2,000.. would you guys do it or would you be afraid of the engine blowing? I know the 4G63 can take alot of power but 22PSI on stock internals kinda scared me.

I have a buddy that has owned 3 DSMs and they've all had engine problems along the way as he has modded them. And he knows what hes doing, just hard to build a skyscraper out of toothpicks (bad analogy?).

However, the 4G63 is a proven engine that has been used for 16 years now, in the US & Japan in several different cars. That engine is the best thing mitsubishi has.

I'm still not sure what to do.. I took another ride in the car, it's freakin amazing how fast it is. The first thing I would do is turn down the boost because it really feels to fast for the street.

Sport Compact Car had one of these in the Budget Bad Boys issue a few months ago and I think it was making over 400hp....and tin can weight. I bet it would be a freakin' blast.
Even if it only survives a short time, if you have the money, I would jump on it.
If I had the money, I would get it and beat the CRAP out of it for as long as it could take it.

He changed his mind and he's not selling the car now. After he sells his busa he might change his mind but until then he's keeping it.
He's done some work to the car, he put in some new pistons (Wiseco 8.5:1) and he's working on throwing in a AWD transmition, he found one for $600..
Probably better for me anyways, my tC needs some tires pretty bad and the money situation isn't looking so good for me.
Last weekend he tore up a brand new C6 (non-z06), the guy didn't know what to think, he had a look of amazment on his face.. very cool.

He normally runs it at 22psi on 93octane around town. It really needs some slicks because it doesn't get any good/real traction until 3rd gear when you're WOT.

I find it kind of amazing that your friend was running in the 11's on a stock motor with just 22psi. When I had my GSX I had a built motor running 21lbs and ran in the 11's on c16 with an aggressive tune. That said if he decides to sell it again definately pick it up. 2k is nothing for a fun car to take to the track. Just be prepared to spend some money on upkeep. The motor is usually sound but everything else is sure to have issues.
