Default ACURA RSX type s

I was just checking out the acura site and all of their cars have less horsepower than originally quoted. The RSX type S was supposed to have 210 but they are now claiming 201 and the RL use to state 300 but now claims 290, the TL use to state 270 but now claims 258. It seems like all cars have lost 9-12 hp. Does anyone know the reason?

They voluntarily switched to the new SAE rating, which...is more accurate than the older way. I guess it factors in stuff like power steering and other stuff that adds load to the engine

So Honda is already using this as well then? Like the 197 hp engine that is in the new Civic Si? It is the same engine that is in the RSX type S but the Acura has 4 hp more. I wonder what our HP figure would be when measured this way. This all goes to show what a pulley can do.

the tC is rated at sae also, which is like 150hp/160tq?... i believe pretty much all auto manufacturers are using the sae measurements now

yeah, there was a news post on it. Most american cars gained while japanese cars loss some HP. The SAE rating is the culprit...this is why the SI isn't 200 hp anymore, etc.

the hp they are making is exactly the same. nothing has changed in terms of the engine, only the method by which they measure the power.

I dont think its required yet. You only have to use the new rating for new engines and engines that have been changed and would be rerated. If you didnt change it from last year you are not required to retest if you dont want to.

Alrite, Type-S here to chime in.

The 05/06 Type-S HP quoted is SAE correct as someone has already stated. The reason why the 06 si is rated at a lower HP than the 06 type-s is because it uses a slightly different motor.

base rsx: k20a3 (same as Civic EP3)
02 - 04 Type-S: k20a2
05 -06 Type-S: k20z1
06 Civic: k20z3

Something to note, the 06 Civic Si has JDM LSD, JDM FD, and TSX 6th gear

Yah, they're 18".

I dunno why, but does nobody know that those are the TRD wheels? They used to be an option on the Scions. I didn't buy them as an option at the time and got them here on the forum, but yah, they are discontinued now. They are Racing Hart GT5 wheels.

Yes, the reason is the new SAE standard. I read somewhere (I think Moter Trend) that the reason for Japanese cars are "losing" power is that they "cheated". Or more accurately, under the old standard, they were technically allowed to dyno the engine with no pulleys, low resistance oils, etc. Most American car companies didn't really do this, even though they had the option, but a lot of Japanese companies did. That's part of the why you're seeing Honda engines take a dive in power while American V-8s are going up.
