Default FJ Cruiser availability question

I went down to my local Toyota dealer in northern Virginia the other day to inquire when they were going to get a display model of the FJ Cruiser because I want to test-drive it. They told me that they are highly unlikely to have any on display because they will only get an allocation of 12 for 2006, and they already have 9 people on their waiting list.

Wonder why the minuscule allocation for a dealership in a big metropolitan area. Looks to me like the Cruiser is going to be a hit. Anyone know?

that is probably their "minimum flow" of FJ's allotted to them. They may get more than that but are guaranteed that many. I read somewhere that FJ production would be similar to the xB which would be like 50k units right?

I would go to another dealer. Toyota only plan to make 49,000 of these a year. Like the tC, it is made in Japan (Hamura plant) but not sold anywhere but the US. According to Edmunds, some Toyota execs found a way to obtain "one" for themselves. You should see them in the showrooms by late Feb or in March and official launch in April of 2006.

I think the demand for SUVs is way lower now so they will produce on demand.

Info from CarDesignNews...

2007 Toyota FJ Cruiser
The FJ Cruiser was first shown as a concept three years ago at Detroit and takes its inspiration from the classic Toyota FJ40 Landcruiser: in particular the down-road-graphic, three straight line wheel arches, separate 'capped' roof and rounded rear corners in plan. Although it was previewed at the Chicago show in February, this is the first time to see it in final production form with full interior. First impressions are very favourable and the car has a strong sense of fun that’s often lacking in the large SUV market. The five-seat cabin, with barn-style rear doors, is designed around basic functionality and flexible utility. The high-set IP features an exterior color trim, with round inset instrumentation giving a deliberate mechanical look, while the attached-look door panels feature tool-like simplicity.

In some respects, it could be seen as Toyota’s answer to the Honda Element: a functional holdall targeted to the iPod generation, but larger and with more power as it’s based on the 4Runner platform with a 4.0 litre V6 engine. There’s certainly space in Toyota’s line-up for this niche model without harming sales of existing SUV’s.

ATTENTION: For all you people talking about jeeps, don't do it. Don't buy a Jeep. Buy a FJ Cruiser. Just as capable off orad, better looking, and superior build quality and superior reliability.

MSRP on these will start around 23K. If you go with one of the upgrade packages you'll end up 25K+. There are also a lot of accessories similar to the Scion setup. Toyota is to only build about 30-40,000 in the first year I think. With over 1,100 dealerships in the country that means pickins' could be a little slim.

Awesome SUV though.....Bravo Toyota

It's a FJ thing......You wouldn't understand!

I thought they were making 49k between this year and next...I thought that is what I read anyways.

Good luck getting one for sticker price...you're going to see dealers marking these up a few grand...mark my word.

Honda did the same thing w/ the CRV it's first few years of existance...low production for whatever reason.

Supply & Demand....$$$$

the new 4wheeler said that they were going to make about 40'000 of them but when i was at the la auto show they said if the demand was high they would probly produce more. check out the new 4wheeler mag they drove one and seemed to love the handling on and off road.
