Former VW owners
#21
As my sig says, I am a VW guy at heart.
My VWs include:
1972 Squareback (my 1st car) I still own her
1971 Beetle, sold to get xB
1974 SuperBeetle
2001 NewBeetle, now my wife's car
Fortunately, I've never had ANY problems with the NewBeetle, but yes the MKIV platform has been plagued with many bugs, albeit the 1.8t is an awesome engine.
Americans in the 50's treated the Beetle much like they treat the xB today. "It looks like an egg", "It's built by former *****", "It's slow". But you know what? It was cheap, reliable, and economic and Americans grew to love them and they outsold every vehicle in history, even though it looked like an egg.
"It looks like a toaster!", "It has nothing made in the USA on it.", "It's slow".
If anything, the xB has more in common with the old Beetle than the New Beetle does. And I love it for that.

dub head right here. water cooled at heart.
first car was a 91 Jetta GLi. had a 2L 16v, was such a fun car. Sold it to a friend and he wrapped it around a pole in a parking structure.
now i have a 83 Rabbit GTi. with a swapped 2L 8v with a callaway stage III kit. this is the funnest car i have ever driven, things got some nice turbo lag that throws you back in the seat. totally unexpected. people look like this after they catch back up to me, after i blow their doors off.
i also have a 79 Rabbit that is basically a parts car. its got a pretty built G60 in it, just needs a new charger.

I picked up a '04 Jetta 1.8T about a month prior to getting my xB and love them both. The Jetta has all the things that I wish the box had. Leather, sunroof, heated seats and stereo controls on the steering wheel. It obviusly scoots along considerably faster than the xB however the xB will outcorner the Jetta, probably because i'm running 21//35/18's on the scion.
Now if Toyota would listen to us and blend the two together and give us the whole package.
hmm... a r32 xB with all the trimmings

Had a ...
'97 Jetta GLS. Traded it for the xB.
Got royally shafted on the purchase, which turned out to be a lease, so we wound up paying on it for 7 years.
Replaced 1 window register twice.
Replaced 2 other window registers.
Replaced 1 window motor.
All 4 Goodyear Eagle RS's got flats over the first two years (horrible tires).
AC clogged with mud once (high humidity and dust was their excuse)
AC had leak in compressor -- replaced it.
AC had leak in condensor coils -- traded it like this.
CD Changer quit working -- traded it like this.
It was mechanically sound -- it just had issues with it's optional accessories. That car wound up costing us a LOT more than it was worth.
Looking forward to Toyota quality!

Had a 1967 stock beetle, and a 71 Karmann Ghia. Loved 'em to death. Now here is a question for true bug fans:
How can I fit a set of 5 spoke Empi's on my soon-to-be RS 3.0? VW 4 lug is 4x130, Scion is I believe 4x100? Redrilled rotors? Wheels? Spacers? I love the Empi's and haven't seen an Xb with 'em yet.

1967 Beetle
1986 Golf Gti
1987 Scirocco 16V (first one in the Pittsburgh area, paid an extra $1500 to own it. Looking back, it was a dumb mistake. It ran and handled great, but the interior rattles drove me crazy.)
