Granted, I haven't been in an Ion specifically, but many of the center-guaged cars I have been in have the bulk of the dash molded as one large piece, while the "pod" is a separate piece that sits on top and angles towards the driver.

If this is the case, they can use the same larger dash piece for both versions, and just modify the gauge pod to angle the other way (or if they're good, use the same one and just mount it differently)
