Default The new GTI

Anybody else excited about the new Volkswagen GTI? I really like this car for some reason, and I've been thinking about trading up my 05 WRX for an 06 model (new 2.5l engine and some new features). The Subaru dealership where I bought my WRX also sells Volkswagen's so maybe I'll take one for a ride.

Here' a pretty good article about it:
http://www.leftlanenews.com/2006/01/...-of-gti-in-us/

Also, if I'm not mistaken, APR Performance already has a ECU upgrade for this engine (from the new Jetta) that ups it to 252hp and 303lb feet of torque! Not too shabby.

I don't think the GTI comes with the 2.5, that's the NA 4-cyl engine in the base Jetta/Golf. Since you're talking about chipping, you probably mean the 2.0T; definitely a step up.

Golf GTI awards so far:

BBC Top Gear – Car of the Year
Fifth Gear – Car of the Year
The Sun – Car of the Year
The Mail on Sunday – Car of the Year
What Car? – Hot Hatch of the Year
Zoo Weekly – Hot Hatch of the Year

And it's said to be one of the safest cars ever built.
2 door hatch versions will be arriving in showrooms at the beginning of February, and 4 door hatch versions will be in June. I'm waiting for the new R32--now an R36 with 300hp :D
However I really hope that VWoA's reliability rises with their MKVs. I vowed never to buy one again after the 98.5-05 fiasco.

I agree that the current Jetta platform (front end in particular) is just plain fugly. Also, Volkswagon reliability isn't too good...

I think the new Jetta GLI and GTI look pretty cool! The Jetta GLI took on the likes of the the Honda Accord Sedan V6 6-Speed, Acura TSX, Pontiac G6 GTP and Mazdaspeed 6 and won in a recent issue of Car and Driver. It wasn't the fastest, or the roomiest, or the prettiest but they said it just plain was more fun to drive and did well in all categories. I'm assuming the GTI with the same 2.0T in it would be even more fun......do they put that engine in the GTI????

Yeah, I think the new front end looks awesome. A lot more Audi-esque and definitely a huge improvement from the old boxy looking ugly thing. If the gains from a reflash are that good, I can't imagine the potential with a turboback exhaust and maybe a new turbo/ic and injectors.

Not to mention the interior is beautiful.

Yes, the 1.8t was one of the mose tunable engines ever, and the new 2.0t is even more promising. VW and aftermarket performance have always been best friends.

Regarding the new Jetta though, I don't like it. It looks too much like the Accord/TSX/Passat/etc. The Jetta has always been a car that, at first glance, you knew what it was. The shape was retained through all its years and the MKIV was beautiful, but this new one stands out like a sore thumb in the evolutionary chart of the Jetta. It used to look unlike any other sedan, now it looks like several

Maybe you should make your post clearer then. You started out asking if we're excited about the GTI then all in the same breath start talking about trading your car in for another Subaru. I'm sure I wasn't the only one who was confused.
