250r is the perfect starter bike. Get it and GEAR, take a safety class, rock it for a few seasons and sell it for a little less than you payed for it.
I like reading motorcycle threads where people are actually doing the smart thing instead of buying a new GSXR1000 as their first bike.

Man, I was thinking about getting one too. Anyone know what the mod potential is for the 250? My xB's been modified with a ramp, and if I take the passenger front seat out, the 250 will fit. I'm thinking about taking it to shows to enter either as part of the vehicle display or as a two-fer in the bike category as well. Turbo 250 would be insane if it exists, would go great with the turbo xB.

I wouldn't even bother modding the 250. People make stuff for it, but if an important goal of yours is to take it to shows and turbo it, you'd be much better off getting a GSX-R. I would not however recommend it as a starter bike.
What I would suggest is get 2 bikes. Get a cheap used 250 to learn on and get a used GSXR to mod and turn more into a show bike. The 250 will pretty much be a wash in cost as you'll be able to sell it for what you paid a year or two from now.
Plus, a 250 doesn't really make a good show bike and I'm guessing very few (if any) have turbo'd it.
mrturbo.com is a good place for turboing a bike.

Yeah, I've seen a few turbo kits for the GSX-R 1000. I just like working on small engines and getting them to perform well above where they were intended. I think a 250 s a show bike would be a fun project as well. Anyone with some $$ can make a 'busa pretty, the 250 would take some creativity and definately be unique. It's the same design philosophy I've been doing on the xB; make it unique, make it functional, make it look good.
Of course I'll do a bit more research first to see what's available. I was originally looking at a Ruckus but figured it would be beter to have something I can drive on all roads, not just in the city.

see theres three man reasons im looking at this bike.. its cheap.. looks good.. and from what i hear its a good starter bike.. im not looking for something real fast cause my cars good enough.. i just want something to cruise on on nice days. Ill probably end up throwing a header and exhaust on it to make it sound better.. but thatll probably be it.

Get it. The 2008 - 2009 have undergone significant upgrade. 70 MPG is always nice too when you know gas prices will go up in summer. I'm trying to find one in black for under $4k. Any tips on talking down the dealers or getting riding gear thrown in? I can probably put down about 2k.

My 2cents: Just get a slip-on if you're looking for better sound. If you go full exhaust, you're most likely going to have to rejet the carbs and to me, the less I have to mess with carbs, the better

I ride a r6 but man I'll tell ya if the 250s looked like this when i was shopping around i probably would have picked it up...i havent ridden one but ill get a chance to in about six months when my fiance purchases one, just gotta pay off our cars first.
I wouldnt mod it too much that seems kinda a waste of money but i would look into getting a yoshimura or two brothers slip on, they make this lil thing sound pretty mean.
One more thing just for the sake of argument, i have a couple of friends that have bought 1000cc bikes as starters.. i was against it personally but they have accustomed to them well. so i think that depends on the rider as well.. you can die on a moped or a busa always have to take in account how you ride and the other people around you.

Careful with the free helmet deals...i am a little biased when it comes to helmets i dont ride anything else but shoei.. also one of my close friends owes his life to arai. A lot of these other helmet companies are cheap for a reason.. They are usually very heavy and have a lot of soft crappy padding on the inside where as the higher end helmets are lighter and fit around your head more snug without as much bs on the inside.
