scion xa vs jeep wrangler
#21
I had a 97' Jeep Wrangler, Red with custom stereo setup (speaker bar, 10" subs), Soft-top w/ Bikini top. 3" Lift kit, and some Mickey Thompson mudders I loved it..
I four wheeled in my Jeep.. I wouldn't really reccomend it as a daily driver though.

LANDCRUISER! Awesome off roady! Classic. JUST LIKE THE JEEP. Jeeps have seen hitler in action. Very little change since the even. Bad steering and handling? Ok if your used to a Cadillac. My xB actually reminds me of a Jeep quite a bit. The wind blows the around and of course slow as snails. Own Either vehicle and your gonna hate it or love it. I love both of them!

I had a 72 LandCruiser. It was the toughest vehicle I ever owned. It would pull a house.
It was also the most primitive vehicle I ever owned even compared to a 65 Beetle and a 72 CJ5. It would cruise nicely about 45 mph but couldn't get to legal freeway speeds, even back then (55mph).
I recommend a long test drive before buying any truck based 4x4.

I'll reinforce what the other folks here have been saying. I've got an '87 Wrangler with a suspension lift and big tires, and for offroading it's great. It's also fun to drive around Vermont back roads in the summer. But for everything else it sucks. The steering is wicked loose, the suspension is stiff, highway driving is downright scary, and by the way, handling in the snow isn't too great either because it's got such a short wheelbase, so it tends to fishtail easily.
Also, as far as the 4-wheel-drive system goes -- it's not at all like the all-wheel-drive found in Subarus and such. The Jeep is a rear-wheel-drive vehicle that has a transfer case fitted in between the transmission and the drive shaft. When four-wheel-drive is engaged, the transfer case turns an auxiliary shaft that drives the front wheels. Both the front and rear drive shafts turn at the same speed -- there is no center differential. Therefore you should ONLY use four-wheel-drive in slippery or offroad conditions, never on dry pavement.
A Wrangler is a fun vehicle if you live in a warm climate and do a lot of driving off pavement. Otherwise, don't bother -- buy a convertible sportscar instead.
