15k scheduled maintenance....

15k scheduled maintenance....
OK,I have changed my oil(synthetic-Royal Purple) every 5k miles and rotated the tires and had my brakes inspected. I see that the only reason to get the dealers routine check is to have the drive shaft bolt tightened(but have heard that is not really an issue on this car).My car is under warranty so I could just make up a problem and get the visual inspections for free....correct? I live in Columbus,OH and Tanskys Sawmill Scion wants almost $200.00 for the 15k check, thats BS. I've looked at other dealerships that only charge around $60.00,what's the deal with that? Am I safe not getting the actual check up as long as I get the various things checked other ways? Do I need to get the drive shaft Bolt tightened and also the chassis nuts and bolts like Tanksy requires(even though the latter is only when I drive under "special conditions"which I do not?

200 is cheap...My 35,000 mile on my XRS was 600. And my 60,000 on my Tacoma was 700. 200 is cheap insurance when it comes time for a warranty problem! They do log in a computer using YOUR VIN to tell when service work is OR ISN'T done!
If you don't want to pay the 200, take it to the one that charges 60

$200.00 is cheap? Maybe to you,I'm poor, barely making my payments as it is. I know quite a bit about cars and I can't see paying some _______ $200 to basically just "look" at my car,if he happens to find something wrong(even if it isn't),there goes some more money. I am new to Toyota and have had nothing but problems with them since I left the showroom.Poor management and technicians(of the three I have been to). Like I said though,I can have this stuff done between me and my Uncle(who is a certified mechanic) I am just wondering if all the things they require are really required as the 2006 has different requirements than the previous years and the fact that different dealerships state different things need to be done, the dealership I bought from gave me a pamphlet when I bought my car that stated service intervals at every 3k for all Scions and later told me that it was not correct, they changed it, so I really am not trusting Toyota or the dealerships at the moment.

Here is 3 links with very different pricing and requirements,2 from my state and another out of state. I am just wondering why "Pure Pricing" flys out the window after the sale is complete and why some dealers require more or less when it is "Toyota's" warranty, not theres?

I said 200 was cheap COMPARED to the 600 you'll be shelling out for a 30,000 or 60,000 mile service. All I'm saying is if you want to keep your warranty, shell out the money for the service. Yes, a lot of it can be done yourself, I would do it myself if my warranty was out or about to run out.
I don't have 200 to throw around either and am not rich by any means, but putting away 1 buck a day would have covered your service cost!
It's like Sally Struthers said..."just .86 cents a day...." You get the point.
As far as different dealers doing different things....Go by the manual you got with the car and make sure they do everything that the manual states. I'm sure you'll find that some dealers do more than what is required.
Also, a good reason to go by the manual is that dealers don't know everything and are sure to make mistakes from time to time. I had a dealer fill my XRS with 87 octane and did not know the car was supposed to take premium.
This is just MY opinion...you can, and obviously will, do whatever you want.
Did you come here asking questions or come here venting? By the response I got from you, I think it would be the second one.

The first link I clicked on was only 139! I don't get it....Not only that, but the tire rotation is optional and you don't have an interior air filter, so knock off another 20 at least! You're looking at 100 bucks. Whats the problem?

My 15,000 mile service here inUtah was 60 bucks...it would have been $15 more, but I used my last free oil change. $200 sounds pretty high...i had my tires rotated & balanced, new air filter, and all the check-up stuff...basically what it says in the users service manual. I don't know what else your dealer is adding to that, but you may be getting screwed...

I do my own 5k maintenance, I'm planning to do my own 15k, and for the 30k I'll probably either do it myself too (learn whatever I don't already know) or take it to my private mechanic. I'm not paying the dealership their ridiculous labor rates.
Legally, you can do all the maintenance yourself without warranty problems -- just make sure you fill out the maintenance log and keep all receipts for parts and fluids.

The price difference is whats call the min and max setups.
Min price is the basics of what toyota recommends (lof, rotate, air filter check everything else)
Max is whats recommend for the area you are in and your type of driving habits--the extra price is for (depending on the dealer) balancing of the tires, wiper blades,a/c refreshener-cleans the air box out,on top of the normal LOF and rotate.
Either way its almost as cheap to have the dealer do the oil change(using your oil) as compaired to do it yourself.
1) no having to keep reciepts
2) oil filter is the same cost
3) history is now on file so it can be check by any toyota dealer
The average oil change is 21.00 take out 6.00 for the oil.So if you supply your own oil .Is it worth 15.00 for all the records they keep, waste oil that they get rid of,and no wasting of your time to do it.Plus they look the car over for any issues while its in there.

And basically charge me $200.00 for an oil change and a tire rotation? The extra stuff you mention is an extra charge....the basic service is mandatory here.Ohio is really that bad I guess?

I'm an assistant service manager at my store, you dont need to get the service to keep your warrenty. You just need proof that you've had oil changes done every 5000 miles. When you hit 38000 miles and if something breaks, whether or not u had the "services" done could influence the service advisor/manager to goodwill warrentee a part/repair for you. My good customers get goodwill warrenty repairs, oil filter/tire rotations warrenty ends at 3/36;5/60

if ur broke and barely making it then a 20K car is not in the card's for you.
If u cant make a 200 maintence service what happens when u hit 30K or 60K.
I guess just see if u have any independent Toyota places that will do it in ur area.
