2006 tC should use 5w-30 oil...

Why would anyone in thier right mind change oil and not the filter? Pardon my french, but that is like taking a dump and not whiping your a$$
I was under the impression you were referring to filling it up, then adding after you start it to compensate for the filter filling up, not changing oil without changing the filter. If the latter is the case, you may as well not even change your oil.

querstion..anyone know the temperature ranges for 10W-30...
ive noticed my enginge is a little bit quiter on 10w-30 then 52, just making sure it can handle the weather here, gets cold sometimes(lowest would be 20 degres F)

Just for an update to this thread, I called scion and I called the dealership and they both say to use 5w-20 now for ALL 06 and 07 tCs regardless of production date.
If it'd make ya more comfortable, use 5w-30 in the summer and 5w-20 in the winter. Apparently they are going to start (if not already) making oil caps that say 5w-20 now. There was a tsb put out that every dealer has that says to use 5w-20 and if you take the car to the dealer for an oil change, they will use 5w-20. It also comes stock off of the production line with 5w-20. I'm going to stop saying 5w-20 now and just use it people or the issues caused later may not be readily resolved as there could be an issue/argument.
Oh, about the 05, they say 5w-30...i don't know...I know the question is coming that the 05 and 06 use the same exact engine, so why are they different, I dont know and they wouldnt say. Call scion to argue - i'm just reporting
Btw, scion wouldn't say, but they hinted at the tc (06-07) having some issues using the 5w-30 and thats why they switched it. So now you all know

sorry to add to the offtopic topic in this thread... but I filled it with 3.75 quarts of oil per a post I saw at my last oil change. I did also replace the filter. Should I be pouring the rest in? I've been checking my dipstick over the past few weeks and its within the appropriate range and there's nothing else wrong with the car.
Engine temperature on average is slightly higher than it used to be, but its still normal and not high.
I used the 5w20 $1.68/qt Discount Auto Parts oil because I'll be changing it again anyway in less than 2500 miles... just if that bit of info helps...

When changing the filter, you should use all 4 quarts. However, I don't think a quarter of a quart less is going to make a difference, but if you have the oil available, put in the full 4 quarts.

My local dealers are still using 5w30 for the 06 and only 5w20 for the 07. The engines didn't change from 05 to 06, but was slightly changed from 06 to 07.
I was told that the TSB simply says that the 06 eand 07 engines can now take 5w20 oils, but it is still recommended to follow what was stated on the cap and manual.

I think I'm going to drain the 5w-20 and and redo my oil change with the 5w-30, I feel really I dunno, I feel uncomfortable. Everyone has mixed opinion with the oil for the 06 tCs and the manual says 5w-30 and even the dealership says 5w-30....*shrugs* I'll drain it next week.

the dealer says 5w-20, not 30. Call scion corporate or go onto http://www.scion.com/contact/contact_us/ and go to live help. You can speak to a scion rep and he'll tell you use 5w-20. If you wanna put in 5w-30, go ahead, but there have been sludging issues (thats why they changed it to 5w-20). Do what makes you happy!
#33
I am pretty sure the sludging issues were caused more by the 5000 miles on whatever oil you can get your hands on. Has anybody actually got an actual copy of the TSB?
I actually did contact the dealer, scion customer service, and even toyota customer service. All of them stated for me to use 5w30. Where did you get the info that there were sludge problems? I know that the older toyota V6 engines have sludge issues, but no, not our 2.4.

Strange. When I called the dealer, scion customer service, and scion live chat, I told them all I am driving an 06 tc and that I should use 5w-20. A tsb was put out regarding it that all 06+ tCs should use 5w-20 and they wouldn't be specific, but they said it was to avoid any sludging issues. They wouldn't tell me if there had been any problem or whatever, they just said that it was to avoid those issues and many other benefits such as gas mileage will come along with the change. In all reality, the 2 oils are soooo freakin close, so just use whatever you want. For me, 5w-20 is the safer bet.

I have been scratching my head over this as well. Maybe somebody here who works for Toyota can get a hold of that TSB for us to see what exactly it says.
One of my friends had that sludge monster 3.0L V6 in his Solara. He did 4500mile Mobil1 changes and 3000 after supercharged to avoid that problem.
In the case of our engines, we have the exact same engine as the 05. So if there was an issue in ours, it would have dragged in the 05 models as well. I was suprised Toyota recommended 5w30 oil for this engine when I bought the car, since most of the latest engines takes 5w20 due to the improved manufacturing tolerances. This included my 05 Accord, which was a total POS by the way.
Anyhow, I am still confused as of this moment.

coming up on my fourth oil change of 5w-30(and 10w once) i have had no sludging issues in my 06 tC. i personally would have to see a TSB my self(not doggin ya or sayin i dont believe ya) because i have seen a lot of different engines(not the tc's) run on many different, mixed, and usually not manufacture recommended oils, for a long time.
but, show me something from them straight up, i'll gladly change
i know chevy has sent me TSB's on my silverado when there were tailgate cable problems(previous vehcile...kinda mis it now that winter's here) and sent one to my grandfather, even though it didnt apply to his.

well, if your only on your fourth oil change, of course you arent having any sludging issues (not that you would on your 40th either, who knows). If you want to see the tsb, I believe there is the link to the list of tsb's in Tomas' signature. You can check it out there.
When I spoke to scion, they were very hesitant to give out any info. I had to badger them to get "there were some reported problems using 5w-30 so we switched to 5w-20 as it is the ideal oil of the car in many ways and is now the factory and dealer supplied oil." I'm not trying to convince you to switch here. No offense, but for all I care, go put 15w-50 in your car, lol I don't care, its your car and do what makes you happy. You have to live with it. I'm just sharing info that i've been given from the most reputable source possible. Its advice, take it or dont, its in your hands. The great part, is that if you make a mistake, its nobodys problem but your own. If your car lasts 300,000 miles, great, you must've known what you're doing! And the same goes for me and everybody else. This forum is not to convince people of things, but to give advice. Do some of your own research if your interested. Don't take my word for it - seriously. Its your car and you have to live with it!

only reason i've stuck with 5w-30 and 10w has been tradition, its what i've been taught by my step-dad and grandfather(again not bashing you, just stating my reasoning) and the temperature here goes up and down like crazy sometimes, 90 degrees in summer, yet it was 13 this morning(talk about a cold walk to class......brrr...)
i;m mostly just owrried about the right oil for temperature, more then i am right oil per manufacture recommendations
thats why im a little hesitant to 5w-20....seems just a little thin from my expierence, but then agian this is the first import i have ever owned(have had 3 other vehicles, all chevys.....)
not wanting to argue, just throwing my 2-cents in, in a friendly fashion....
edit:
as a self-checking method, when i hit 20k, i might take it to dealer for them to change(hey still got 2 free ones, might as well use them) and i'll ask which oil they use......now this dealer isnt the smartest, so even if they are supposed to use 5w-20, they might use 5w-30 still......
but if they have switched to 5w-20, then i definetly will, cause if its important enough for those idiots to actually change, then it probably is important.

well, Toyota engines have been slowly developing a reputation for sludging problems. Although it hasn't been widespread, the fact is, there were still design flaws that Toyota didn't own up to immediately.
So yea, just stick to the manufacturer's recommendations, as I'm sure they're trying to avoid such problems.

Of course since its winter, i'm using 5w-20. If the summer gets real hot, I may consider the 30, i'll have to play it by ear. So i'm not against people using other oils than 5w-20, i hope you all realize that, i was just trying to relay the info. I think I may use 5w-30 in the summer and 5w-20 in the winter. If I lived in florida or something, I dont care what toyota says, i'm using 5w-30 if not higher. The fact is, it isnt logical that toyota says to use such and such an oil. In maine, it is much colder year round than it is in phoenix or miami. They say 5w-20 - yea, that works in Maine, but I wouldnt bring that near my car in the hot areas 365.
