Not a bad idea...

 

I've had mine tC since the day I bought in July 2005, I used 5W-30 Toyota oil for an half a year for my 2006 tC. Then I started to use Royal Purple 5W-30 til now. My car has 44K miles and the TSB recommend 5W-20. Is it ok for me to use 5W-20 year around or what? I don't think 5W-20 will hurt in the summer if toyota recommended the type of grade. I think I should stick with 5W-30 but I dunno, I'm confusing with two different grade with a little different.

 

It's really up to you. I mean come on, this 2.4 engine is a proven toyota engine, it'll probably run fine on coffee.

 

yea i dont know about everyone else, but i bought the extended warranty from my deal for 100,000 miles and every oil change is free until that is up. So if they were smart they would put the right kinda oil in lol. If I ever move away from my dealer before my warranty is up that will suck. Did anyone ever change their tranny oil (manual trans.). My buddy replaced all his oils all around with royal purple and his motor was blowin oil all over after 2 oil changes with that stuff, but it was a 2001 Acura Integra LS 5-Speed (Honda) i know right that explains it.

 

A lot of people have swapped out their tranny oil. I did so at about 5K. I couldn't believe how harsh the shifting was, it would even grind sometimes under normal conditions with the clutch fully compressed. On a recommendation by the guys on here, I put in the redline mt-90 tranny oil and it honestly remedied the entire problem. There is a thread on that.
Sythetic oil is proven to be much more effective and overall better for the car vs conventional oil. Granted, that is why it costs more. It is definitely recommended to switch over sooner than later if you plan on doing it, but nevertheless, his acura integra didn't blow its engine b/c of a high quality synthetic oil lol. It must have been for another reason. Tests have shown that cars using synthetic oil have shown less wear over the course of time and are in better overall condition. This is because it lubricates things better and keeps the engine a bit cooler in comparison to conventional oil. Although the price difference is made up in the amount of oil being used. Conventional = 3K miles safely. Synthetic can do double that safely. Amsoil synthetic is guaranteed 25K - not that I would ever in my dreams do that, but it's something to think about. Scion puts in the manual to service the conventional every 5K. Most people who plan to do 5K and look at the conventional oil after 3K quickly change their minds! lol Hope this is helpful...


ElDiablo - use either one. The difference is incredibly minimal. The 5w-20 is a bit lighter so will increase gas milage a bit, help prevent sludging (which isn't much of an issue if you don't like in the arctic), and helps with cold starts in comparison to 5w-30. You live in texas though, so it's never truly winter down there. You're fine using either one - i'd personally stick with the 5w-30 though in such constant heat.

 

I also did change my manual tranny oil to Royal Purple and It runs great. I should have add a little more since the 3rd gear kinda grind a little sometimes in the cold weather until the car is fully warm up then its stop. I checked the fluid again and its not even over flowing or not even from 0mm to 5mm inside of the drainages so gotta put a little more. I gotta be more careful.

 

Goin synthetic with 5w-30 isn't a bad thing is it?

I never dreamed that was possible either, but I'm givin' it a run for it's money. AMSOIL has been promoting 25,000 mile drain intervals since 1972. AND, they have yet to have engine failure caused by their products.

AMSOIL has a new 0W-20 that replaces the 5W-20 and is good for 25,000 mile drain intervals.

I run the 0W-30 inplace of the 5W-30 in my xB. Will perform fourth oil change at 75,000 miles on odometer.

Oh yes, and every Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) state trooper vehicle is AMSOIL bumper-to-bumper.

Well that's all good info. Very informative. Remember the average driver doesn't do preventive maintenance on their vehicles so the fact that we actually change our oil at some point (no matter what weight) will be good for the vehicle.
