Basically, in the detailing world, the claybar is the last line of defense before your car's paint surface has to go under the compounds, which can actually "shave" a level of clearcoat off the car. It basically "pulls" stuff out of the the surface of the car without harming the finish or removing any clearcoat (if used properly). Do a google search for "how a claybar works" or something and you will find tons of hits. Also, the claybar will remove basically anything you have on the surface where you use it, including any waxes, polishes, etc. Remember to re-wax the area when you're finished. NOTE: I do use the Zaino claybar, but any claybar will work. In fact, most car clay comes from the same manufacturer regardless of brand on the packaging.

Before using any compounds, try a claybar. If the claybar can't remove them, then use the compounds. You should be able to pick up a claybar at your local parts store in the cleaner/wax section.

As for compounds removing clearcoat, it all depends on what type of compound you are using and whether you are applying it by hand or machine. Using a fine polish such as Meguiar's DACP or 3M fine cut rubbing compound applied by hand or an orbital buffer would be a safe choice to remove stains or minor marring.
I believe 3M products can be found at auto stores like NAPA.
