I took mine in after hearing about this problem and remembering that mine skipped as well.

I told them the problem and gave them the TSB # and the service guy said they had them in stock and he would replace it if I can duplicate the problem

So I found the part that skips on the cd and played it for him and he said he'll get it fixed

An hour later I get a call saying that they got it taken care of but I doubt they did. I think they just added a sticker onto the head unit and gave me a new manual cause all my preset settings are the same and it still skips

That's what irked me. Toyota said that the units were defective, yet the dealer put the onus on you and me to prove that a problem existed (actually, inmy case, to have the mechanic find it within a few seconds of CD play). In my case they backed down from that position. and ordered a new head unit without me having to sit there for a half-hour waiting for a skip to happen. However, while waiting for the head unit to come in I took an 8-hour trip and got to say "Thank you Toyota!" every time the thing skipped.

Sounds like you got the run-around.

BTW, I've never been able to get mine to skip predicably. It skips about every 15-30 minutes but never at the same point on the CD. It doesn't matter if the CD is pre-recorded or burned, or if it is old or new.

I'll find out shortly about mine, as my car is in the shop as we speak.

Update- Reno Toyota installed the new cd player today BUT they scratched my center console bezel. It was a 1 cm scratch but they opted to order a brand new bezel and install it for free (Another service visit) bah. It's a bummer they did scratch it but i guess free is good.

Try to keep the old one.. you never know if you might have a project you'd like to try, or if you could sell it to someone else.

Default “skip” problem…

OK! You guys have a “skip” problem… Are you doing store bought CD’s or MP3’s?

I have burned MP3’s CD that is giving me what I would call “digital distortion” The MP3’s are burned at 128kps. Never had a problem with Awia CD/MP3 player that I installed 3 years ago in my Honda. But this CD player in the Xb is killing me. The “digital distortion” / skip is the equivalent of dragging a needle across a LP (OK, I just lost ¾ of you… LP, a vinyl… never mind)

PANT Bulletin 03-23
TSB # AU004-03

What are these numbers’s to the dealer? The service rep just tossed out, “Oh, you need to burn the MP3’s on a better quality CD R/W”

I can't say I have the best computer system but I ain't cheap when building my own system. I have the best CDROM and CDRW that you can possibly get... PLEXTORs

If they said its my CDRW, I will tell them to help me find a better CDRW if I already have the best

BTW, that is exactly what most dealers do... TSB # don't mean anything to them
They have to dupli the problem and even they did they will still blame on something else.

You just have to find that one dealership really takes care of customers when comes into servicing the car.

Mine skipped with factory-made CDs, just out of the wrapping.

It happened about every half-hour.

The funny thing was that i showed them this whole post by printing it out. The service advisor went into the office, i guess to talk to the service manager, while i waited outside for 5 minutes. I specifically told them about the problem and the TSB and PANT #. The service advisor had to check something on the main computer and he came back saying that he'll order the new part and i'd have to come in to make in appointment afterwards. No questions asked. I'm guessing that some dealerships will give people crap about it but i had that problem every half and hour and now i don't anymore.

In the paperwork they said they duplicated the problem but i was in and out of the dealership in less than 2 hours. They probably did duplicate it but i think they really didn't and just installed the new unit for the hell of it.

The funny thing is that it's no skin off their nose to do the repair. Toyota pays for it.

It just seems that some dealers are so tied into resisting warranty repairs that you have to break through that barrier. I wonder if Toyota sanctions dealers that have higher-than-average warranty service rates?

I just got back from the dealer earlier for the replacement of the center console bezel and they didn't replace it because they didn't have the stickers for the heater controls and didn't want to pull off the stickers from the original console. A 3rd visit. bummer.

i talked with the parts guy at quality scion about the skipping problem because my g/f's skipped a couple times and there was a cut off date on scions that went out with the bad cd player. my g/f got hers on 10/1 and it should of been ok. they still ordered her another one and are going to replace it. the guy also said that there were placements being sent out to replace the stock of bad units, so most people should be ok. it would be the early birds that picked up the scions first.

The problem is that the cars and stereos seem to come to the dealers separately. The "Scion Technician" installs the stereo (1-disk or 6-disk) desired by the buyer at the point of purchase. This means that the parts department has several stereos on the shelf and if they don't rotate their stock a buyer could end up with an "early" buggy stereo even if they bought a car today.

Anyone know how to tell the difference between the "good" stereo and a "buggy" stereo? The model number on the front stayed the same, but I'll bet that there is a different number elsewhere on the unit. This would be of great interest to those buying take-off stereos.

Was that a question?

If so, do call them or even better go to see them. Talk to the service _manager_, not the service writer. All the service writer can do is stick you into their "system". Tell the manager of the hassles others have had in getting this known and documented problem resolved. Give him the TSB number and ask him to order a new stereo, as there is no point in your making an appointment until they have a new stereo in hand.

Perhaps by talking directly to the service manager you can avoid the "we can't reproduce it" roadblock that I had to work my way through and therefore avoid the hassle of a second service appointment.

Good Luck!

George
