i still find the OEM Toyota oil filters are the best...

as far as oil? a good synthetic.
i'd use either royal purple, redline, or mobil 1

What oil were you using previously?

In 2,000 miles I'm going to Redline or Royal P but I can't decide. My transmission is in need of some Redline also.

I havent heard good things about Mobile1. Ive heard certain dealerships voiding warrantys if the customers used Mobile1.

I choose Pennzoil Platnium synthetic and factory filters.

UOAs on M1 shows more engine wear when compared to Pennzoil Platnium in our motors. There is no truth to the generic statement, "the best oil is...." as every engine is different. The only way to know for sure is with a used oil analysis.

I wish Pennzoil would distribute PP 0W20 to stores... I would switch over if so... I don't want to order it offline.

Until then, I will use M1 0W20. It runs extremely quiet and very happy with how it feels in the engine.

I might be taking my oil in to Chevron's oil lubricant lab and posting a new thread on my own oil analysis's. I would probably post new results every 5k but I would like to vary the motor oils at the same time. Results might be skewed but it would be interesting to see the results over 2-3 years. Not sure but just a thought.

I was a short term fan of 0W oils - until I saw 2 UOAs on them. One was a PP 0w?? and the other M1 0w30.

Both showed (again, in Gen 1 xB motors - cant say if it applies to your xB) vis breakdown in a short time span, much more so than with the 5W oils. Having oil less able to cling to metal surfaces is not a good thing IMO.

Regardless of ones preference of oil, one thing is certain, these motors are hard on oil.

Some tC owners have had issues with M1 burning up quickly. I'm not sure if I could say M1 has been "quiet" in terms of engine tone, valvetrain noise, etc.
I'm kind of interested in seeing how other synthetics will handle in our engine.

What OCI were you running?

Also, 80% of my driving is freeway so I am quite "easy" on my oil.

In most if not all cases, the engine will outlast the car s as long as you change the oil and maintain the car regularly, regardless if you use synthetics, conventional, etc...


As far as noise, my car is extremely quiet. Much more quieter then when the dealer used whatever oils they put in for my two freebies.

Less noise = better lubrication.

Speaking of, I am due for an oil change in about 800 miles now...

Eh, I'm only at 8,000 miles but
I used a freebie around 1,500 which switched it to conventional OEM oil.
Idle noise soon after was still smooth with a intermittent/variable valve tick(still sounded normal/healthy to me.)
Went to M1 Syn. at 5,000 miles. Engine idle changed with a sound similar to a sublte premature failure of a water pump...and the valvetrain picked up some new chatter.
I have listened to other tCs that have differed in mileage, year, oil brand, yada yada and notice a smoother/quieter idle.
My driving is 90% highway cruising at 65 mph.

I'm no where near worried about it but I am still anxious to see if anything changes next oil change. lol

Mobil 1 is greatly over-rated.

I did a heat test last year where I put various oils of the same viscosity in a muffin pan to see which oil would burn off easiest.

Obviously, the dino oils burned off fastest. But in terms of synthetics, Mobil 1 burned off quite easily. Royal Purple didn't fare very well, either.

Best oils were Amsoil, Quaker State and Pennzoil Platinum.

I use Amsoil myself since I get dealer pricing. It costs more but I usually go with extended drain intervals on all the vehicles I put it in. I've taken it up to 15k miles in a Cobalt and used 1 year change intervals on some GMC vehicles.

I would prefer to use PP or Amsoil if they had 0W20 available in stores... But they don't, so I use M1.

I like it though and change it out every 5k, so I don't push it's limits or anything. Runs smooth and does what it needs to. No complains and will continue to use it. If you PUSH your oil though to limits, you would want to check into possible better oils. But every engine does better with different oils, its just finding the one BEST for YOUR car. UOA's are all over the place for different cars. One can be amazing, another horrible with the same grade and oil. It just depends!
