Default Cracked Windshield

Had a rock fly into my windshield that left a good sized "bullseye". The very next day, the crack spreaded and now is about a foot long. I'm assuming that Toyota will not cover this, as of course its not there fault, but has anyone noticed the windshield having lots of lil chips? I'm just somewaht upset being the fact that my car has only 4k miles on it. I understand the windshield is at a very slight angle which could be the reason that it easily gets chipped, but wondered if Toyota could of thought of somn to resolve this issue, if possible. Anyway, anyone know if Honda Elements have the same problem?

welcome to the chiped club i have three about the size of nickles and mines 4 months old it sucks. The glass shop i go to where they attempted to repair them but they where to bad to fix told me he already did 2 xbs. we are cursed but its the design of the car get used to it. I hope toyota or someone in the aftermarket will introduce a plexiglass or some style that wont chip so easily.

you don't have to be following some one to get a chip / crack.

I got a foot long crack with 1500 miles on the car. Garbage truck going the other way had (gravel???) flying out the back of it. *POP!* and an instant 12" crack from the wiper and up the windshield.

And until now, I'd never some much as chipped a window.

I know you won't believe this, but I have found if you keep a good distance and make the effort to change lanes or get around gravel/ cement trucks, you will reduce the number of hits. I got one hit that was repaired and I have almost 6000 miles. I do have numerous micro chips that you only notice if you are washing your windows.

Do you think maybe you are in denial about following close and don't want to give up the "road chase / frequent lane change/ road tag" mode of driving ?

Just a thought.

Then we need to examine the definition of avoidable and unavoidable. It happenned to me once and may happen again during an unavoidable situation. That doesn't mean it isn't wise to avoid situations where it is more likely to happen......such as folowing too close to other cars or staying behind a rock truck. Why not make the odds favorable to you.

Oh you mean we should use common sense while driving.

I must agree.

dunno if this will decrease the chips in my windshield, but I do agree it is a good idea...

...and I hope my insurance company has the common sense to never classify a rock in the windshield as "avoidable"...

We picked up our new blue onyx xB last Tuesday, August 3rd. Less than 200 miles later, on Saturday, I picked up a nice chip right in the dead center from a car merging lanes in front of me.

I love the xB, but if this is going to be a constant affliction (living in NYC), I'm going to be seriously...annoyed.

On another note, what are my options? Do I want to talk to the dealer about it? Will an aftermarket windshield or taking it somewhere to fix the chip void my warranty?

Well, the windshield isn't warranteed against cracks, so what voiding is going to happen? If the new windshield install leaks or something, it's the glass installers problem to cover their work, not Toyota. If you take it to the dealer to get replaced, 99% of dealers will call the local auto glass place to do it and mark up the price for you.

The first thing to do is call your insurance company. Most companies call windshield cracks comprehensive, not collision. Most will have a lower deductible to replace the windshield than the deductible for getting into an accident. Usually around $100. I'd have them recommend someone. Also, it doesn't count against you like having an accident does.

Got my first crack at 3 weeks old, but it hasn't spread. Got a nasty spiderweb one down near the passenger side wiper about 2 weeks ago. Hasn't spread yet but the sound it made when it hit made me think something dented the roofline. Shook the friggin car...
