Default How often do you change you Synthetic Oil?

Did a quick search for a thread on this and didn't find anything specific, but like I said "a quick search."

I am running mobile 1 with a stock toyota filter and just curious how often others running a similar oil/filter combo change their oil? I believe that manual says every 5k but I have always changed oil every 3k. Oh yeah and most of my driving is highway so I do not fall into the "severe driving conditions"

i used to change mine every 5-7k with mobil1 + mobil1 filter.

now i use amsoil + toyota oem filter. filter change (and adding in lost oil from filter change) every 5k. oil change every 20k.

Toyota recommends an oil change every 5k on all vehicles 2004 and newer. I'm still skeptical of this because i know for a fact that there are several engines that had no significant changes made between the 2003 and 2004 model years that would warrent 2k longer changes. I dunno about going 20k in between changes, but synthetic oil will definately give you less deposits than mineral oil, so 5-7k might not be too risky for a lower milage car. Even if the oil is not contaminated at 20k, it has significantly broken down and does not have the same lubricating properties as fresh motor oil.

well, amsoil guarantees the oil is good for 25k. it's more expensive, but apparently it works. i mean this is the second time ive filled in amsoil for 20k and just did filter changes every 5, and the motor runs great, same mileage. no issues at all.

this is good for me, since ive had this tc for a year and ive put 41k miles on it :]

my old auto tc had a hair less in the same amount of time. but that one used all mobil1 + mobil1 filters.

using amsoil saves me a lot of money, and i bought a box of toyota filters. saved even more money, considering mobil1 filters were over $10/ea.

If it works for you then stick with it. I'm not too picky on how soon i change my oil and filter since i do them for free, so i shoot for every 3-5k with toyota oil and filter.

Correct me if I am wrong but from what I understand synthetic motor oil doesn't breakdown it just gets contaminated over time.

Is your oil black when you change it out after 20k? And how much do you loose when you just change out the filter?

Depends on who is defining "breakdown", but for the sake of arguement, yes, you are correct that syn does not breakdown because there are less additives too breakdown, but it does pick up contamination from many sources. Nothing you can do, nor filter you can install, will remove all these contaminants.

Worse than that though, is thickening (no, I dont mean thinning) of the oil.

If you feel like educating yourself about motor oils, here is a great resource:

be warned though, you will learn more than you EVER wanted to know about motor oil.

so how often do you change your oil Hathenbrewing?

Oh yeah what I ment by breaking down is that it's lubricating properties do not change.

"I wish my grass was emo so it would cut itself." That is hilarious by the way.

I run synthetic oil as well. Castrol Syntec 5w-20 in the summer, and Pennzoil Platinum 5w-20 in the winter.

I change it out every 4-5k. Could the oil go longer? - You bet.

I enjoy changing the oil.

Ive been running Pen. Plat. 5w30 ever since I got a UOA done to compare M1 to PP....PPs numbers were much better than M1, so I made the switch. Still running a Toyota filter, but 1 size larger than stock. Overall I am extremely happy with PP...the engine is quieter when caompared to M1, MPGs stayed the same, but it only costs a third of M1.

Now im running Elf 0w30 w/ larger factory filter.

I change my oil every 3 months which ends up being between 3200 - 3600 miles. I enjoy changing my oil too much to stick with a 3 or 4 times per year OCI.

Heathen, what do you mean by 1 size larger than stock? The stock filter is a YZZ-F1, the next size larger filter would be a YZZ-D1, which has a larger diameter then the F1. Be cautious running this filter on the 2AZ because they can end up leaking alot as the sealing surface is a different size. I've seen cars come in the dealership with significant oil leaks from having the wrong factory filters put on.

Sorry...should have been more specific:

Toyota 90915-10004 (older part #) or 90915-YZZF1 (most recent # I believe) is slightly longer than the OEM filter while being the same dia.

I do believe that 90915-YZZA2 is what the box comes with from the factory, at least that is what my '06 came with.

The F1 is what should be goin on your car. the 10004 with the red seal is what comes on from the factory, but is replaced with the yzz-f1 afterwards. the yzz-f2 is the same diameter as the f1 but is noticeably short and goes on the older camrys (5s-fe, 3s-fe) and the corollas. The A2 you have pictured there is kind of a rare filter and i think it may have been replaced with a newer part #, but i could be wrong. I don't ever recall putting one on a car actually. But the F1 is what you should be usuing anyhow.
