Jiffy Lube Oil Change

Reading this thread reminds me how naieve some people really are. Let me state right up front that I am a Toyota certified Master Diagnostic Technician with a bit of experiance (and some grey hair), but also enjoy cars and motorcycles in general. I'll pass on a few things I've learned along the way. First and foremost: Most any quick-lube place is not the place for your car if you like your car and want to take the best care of it you can. These places are where 16 yr. old nimrods get to learn on your car. They use the cheapest oil and filters available. Toyota oil filters have a patented anti-drainback valve in them to keep oil in the pump and oil passages after the car is turned off so when it is restarted the car has instant oil pressure. Have you ever noticed when removing a Toyota oil filter that it is invariably full and oil runs everywhere when you unscrew it? This is a good thing. Secondly, unless you live somewhere way the hell far away from here synthetic oils are of no practical advantage. Period. The car was designed to use SAE SJ energy-conserving oil and any can that has this seal contains oil that is proper for your car. The SAE tests these oils and rates them accordingly and you can bet your ___ these fellers are a lot smarter than you! The claims made by many synthetics are designed to sell oil and are the perfect solution to a non-existant problem at a much higher than normal price. You do the math. Next , let's move on to the dealership myths. My dealership charges $24.95 for an oil change. We use Quaker State semi-synthetic oil and Toyota oil filters. The person doing your oil change has seen a Toyota up close before and knows what he is looking at and working on. I have seen way to many examples of "saving a few bucks" that come back to bite you in the ___ real hard! A few examples are #1 wiper blades. Toyota sells the rubber inserts for your high-quality wiper blades for about $3. Bubba at Jiffy-lube will toss your $21 wiper blades in the ____-can and proceed to install a sweet set of $8 Ancos that will not last long and won't take the $3 inserts when you figure it out. #2 These fine fellers at Jiffy-lube will suddenly pronounce that it is time to replace your plug-wires and will happily sell you a set of cheap aftermarket wires that are worse than the original wires that supposedly need replacing. A month or two down the road when your car is missing it's a real ___-scratcher when they tell you you need new wires and you say "but those ARE new wires!" (DUH!) The tech looking over your car will see things in 2 minutes that you would never see. Think about it, these guys work on these cars all day every day for years and are extremelyfamiliar with them. Bubba might be seeing one for the first time. I work on cars all day, but if you brought me a new Ford or something I would not know anything about them or what to look for. Do you think Bubba knows that your new transmission takes TypeIV fluid? Want to find out? It always amazes me the ideas some people have about dealerships, Yea some of it may have been true many years ago, but people are too informed nowadays to put up with any bull____ or shady practices. Have you seen any dealerships on Dateline or 60 Minutes? Or was it Bubba at the independant shop who was trying to make a fast buck? I hope some of you guys don't shop for surgeons the way you shop for car repair or insurance for that matter....but that is another story~~~~~~~~~~~~~scott

DIY is the best way
I just got my 2nd free oil change this morning at 8500miles. I am kind of crazy about oil change. I replaced oil/filter at 600miles (DIY), 2500miles (DIY) and 5500miles (1st free change at Toyota). I had never dealt with any dealers before SCION. It has been good experience so far. People talk nasty about FRAM oil filter, but my experience with it hasn't been that bad. On my previous vehicle, 1988 Honda CRX, I had used FRAM oil filter for 10 years. I bought it brand new and put 250K miles before I sold it. At 250K miles, compression was still 95% of a brand new spec. My choice was Catrol GTX and FRAM oil filter. After the 3rd free oil change, I will start working on SCION by myself. I may go back to FRAM oil...

you went to jiffy lube for the first oil change.
*shakes head
you have just ruined the future of your car. you most likely have the wrong filter, and incorrect amount and wrong weight of some crappy oil in your engine. i wouldn't let jiffy lube clean my tires.
well, maybe if they paid me to clean my tires.
scott takes the cake on this one. im not old, but in my year of working I agree completely. except for the Ford part. you'd still know more of what to do than a jiffy guy if you were under one.
anytime a real bad problem comes into our dealer the story goes "i just had my (insert car part/system) fixed/replaced/worked on at (insert crappy save a buck shop)" we look at the car and one or a combination of the following occurs:
the wrong part is used
there are parts missing
something was installed backwards/upside down/broken/crossthread
something nearby the fix was broken (the sensors on air filter boxes anyone?)
they rigged some piece, like just put silicone around it to make it work, or ziptied something etc.
the list goes on and on. if you don't know about cars, befriend someone who does and/or learn. otherwise, be smart enough to pay the pros and maintain your vehicle.

Jiffy Lube not only overcharges, but they overtighten EVERYTHING, assuming they actually replace it. I had them change the oil on my Jeep once - got home and checked it all out and the plug was rounded off and it took 45 minutes and 3 different people to get the filter off when I went to change it myself. Never again. They can Jip their Lube on other peopless rides.

Ahhhhhh....back to the old oil drama.
First of all, I can only reiterate my feelings about using places like Jiffy Lube. I have been part of this forum for a couple of months now and from what I can tell people are pretty happy with their scions and seems to take great pride in caring for them. Washing and waxing, aftermods such as wheels and this or that kit. With this in mind I am at a loss as to why those same people choose to neglect the most important part of their car by taking it to a "Jiffy" whatever. Engine maintenance will always come first and foremost on my list. If you want to skimp on something then have some pimply kid wash the damn thing or inflate your tires, but engine fluids, no no, I have to draw the line.
I had a thought that perhaps some take their care to the "jiffy" because they are masochistic, tragic but possible, If this is the case before you take your scion to the "Jiffy" for another oil change just give me a call and I will come over so you can pay ME to take your money and kick you in the nuts. Cmon people, show as much pride in your engine mantinence as you do with your bling bling or whatever. I can change the oil in my xb in about a half hour, hell, who cant spare a half friggin hour.
Now with regard to the 3 free oil changes I can say through experiance you can get them ANYTIME you wish. I had my first oil change this week with 900 miles on the odometer with no problem.
With respect to the toyota tech that chimed in, I can say that the service at your dealer may be exceptional but please dont assume it is a standard. When I got my oil changed I was shocked that my tech didn't even speak english. Now you may say that has little to do with his knowledge of my xb except he told my father (who is quadralingual) that he had never worked on one before. Because of this he treated my xB as any other vehicle and tried to put in 10w-30 instead of 5w-30. Not a big deal really, but not exactly on the ball either. This is why regardless of where you have your car serviced you MUST always keep an eye on the tech. Today was the iol weight tomorrow maybe...who knows. More importantly this is why every owner should understand how correctly perform basic maintenance work on your vehicle. Oil changes I would definitly classify as BASIC!
It was also said that "synthetic oils are of no practical advantage". This statement CAN be true but is very subjective. If you are one of those people that drives like your mother, shifting at 2500-3000 rpm consistantly and never goes over 60mph then I would say synthetic oil is a waste of your money. HOWEVER, if you like to DRIVE your scion and let the few ponies out every chance you get, shift in the higher rpm band and drive 60+mph consistantly then you should CONSIDER a good synthetic. In the race industry we always use a basic valvoline for break in and then switch to Mobil 1 syn after. Why do we do this, because it means that car will be more likely to run 40 races instead of 30 before rebuild. Have you ever taken the head off a car that used syn as opposed to one that used reg. There IS a difference, at least from what I have seen. Now some will blast me because "racing" is very different from street, and this is true, but the difference has grown increasingly smaller in recent years. Ever since "tuning" cars became "cool" every jit from here to cali has been trying to redline their civic or integra. Either way, street or race, both have to deal with the same problems, heat, vescosity and wear. Synthetic is a TOOL and in my experiance has earned its place in my shop.
Long story short, I like to get every bit of power out of my strret cars and so I have no problem spending the extra couple of bucks to help ensure a long life for my power plant, all in all IMO it is really a small price to pay.
Sorry for the rant......

Ah, another one caught up in the hype. You contradict yourself without even knowing. If you change your oil every 3000 miles (or 5000 for that matter) could you tell us all what brand of oil is it that is breaking down or losing viscosity? My car goes into fuel-cut well below 7000rpm. Does yours rev higher or something? I live in Texas and it gets around 100 in the summer. Is that hot enough? I get oil for free and you know which one I use? Last time I grabbed Quaker State. Synthetics are not bad, just totally unneccessary in most cases. Lets say you were going to hang a picture on the wall. Not a large picture mind you, say 8x10. I whip out a finishing nail and tack hammer. Bubba whips out a railroad spike and sledge hammer and proceeds to tell me how much stronger his nail is, how it will last longer, the picture will hang better, it's more secure, etc........Is he right? Maybe in someones opinion. In my opinion, He has come up with the ultimate solution for a nonexistant problem. Good enough is good enough. Diminishing returns take over after good enough andare of no consequence. I have actually never worn a Toyota engine out. I don't recall ever seeing one that was really worn out. I've seen many that were neglected, but not worn out. I have just never actually seen a real benifit to using synthetics in a street car in most locations. But we makes our choices and spends our money any which way we want!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~scott

You sound like a guy that would take his sister to the prom- and expect to get lucky! Also you were a complete _______ to that guy who asked" what did you name your car?" You need a big dose of act-right.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~````scott
