I'm on a road trip in Richmond, VA and noticed that my signal light fuse blew when I use the left one after driving around town for an hour in the rain. I replaced it 3 times while trying to find out what's going on then the engine stalled at idle with the turn signal flashing. When I restarted, the VSC , Check engine, and TRAC Off warnings came on. I went through all the fuses to find all were still good but replaced anyway. Now the engine won't rev above 3K without what I believe is the rev limiter kicking in. I thought I was going home tomorrow but I can't go fast enough to get on the highway now! ALL SUGGESTIONS WELCOMED!

Not sure on the turn signal but the other problem might be the MAF sensor.

Something might be shorting out causing it to blow the fuse. Better visit the nearest dealer. Have you done any mods such as mirror covers with turn signals?

 

Dude, i can't really help by answering your question, but i can tell where the Toyota shops are at.
depending on where you are at, go to McGeorge on Broad St. They do wonderful work, or, if you are on the Southside of the River, head out to Haley Toyota on Midlothian. They too do some good work. in fact, my step sister works out there.

yeah any other mods done? Also do you have cruise control? What about the sterring wheel, do you have the leather wrap on it?

 

Don't jinx me Mark! I have those mirrors covers and drove in the down pour all day today. Those are plug and play anyway.

I'm thinking a short somewhere and MAF for the engine shortcomings. And as others have stated, what other mods do you have?

 

Umm... call Scion Road Side Assistance and have them tow that lemon of a car to the nearest dealer.

 

the only mod was using the Helix tail lens but it seems to match up to the original on the the electrical traces and fit. no cruise or anything like that around the steering...pretty much stock or factory installed options. Last mods were over a month ago and I drive nearly 200 miles a day.

BTW, I noticed Sunday at the mid-Atlantic picnic that when we all hit our panic alarms that on my box, the brake lights flashed alternately with the flashers...don't recall seeing that happening on anyone elses box. Thoughts???

 

Does your AEM CAI have the bypass valve on it? Does the T-Rex grill allow water to pass through or is the back blocked off? Just random questions to try and help figure out what got to the MAF.

 

No it dosen't, I had it on my car.

 

Just got back from the dealer, they replaced the air sensor on the CAI and now running fine. They recommended cleaning the CAI at every oil change to keep the crap out of it. I am just coming up on 10K with the CAI. I must have hit a big puddle or something last night that washed the crap down the pipe. I was making some exhaust noise for the people of Richmond who must not have seen too many of these boxes around just before.

This could be a rough winter if that's all it takes to take the car down.

BTW, I do have the T-rex blocked with a removable piece of plastic siding that I cut and painted. Heard everyone was having trouble keeping that clean.

 

blown fuses will NEVER cause a short. The reason they are there is actually thecomplete opposite. When there is an over current, the fuse "blows" and creates an open. This would open the circuit and allow no further current. If there is a short BEFORE the fuse, however unlikely, the fuse would not blow, as the current would not flow trough the fuse, but the short. Are you removing the neg. terminal prior to installing any fuses? if not, you could be blowing them when you install them

 

Upon further review of the symptoms I popped the tail light off and noticed that the body of the car (bulb openings) could be coming close to the circuit trace near the signal. I then insulated that area with electrical tape and neither problem has occured since. Note: this incident occured after driving around in the rain for over a week. Also, the streets around Richmond, VA are very bumpy and rough compared to where I live. As this has been the first time I have driven around town for more than a day in the rain. I had to conclude that some of this moisture was somehow creating a circuit as the car is vibrating heavily on the rough streets.

Yes, I understand that once a fuse has blown that the flow of electricity will not continue. But the short (blown fuse) occured just before dash lights came one each time thus indicating some other flow could be happening or a "sneak circuit" was being established. I still beleive that the two are somehow related. I cleaned my CAI filter and found very little dirt and installed the air bypass as recommended by everyone here and at the dealership. I went through two MAF sensors in 150 miles while this mysterious short was happening in the light circuit. The flasher (signal light) circuit would only blow a fuse with the signal light on and while applying the brakes for more than 30 seconds yet the brake circuit did not blow. After I applied the electrical tape to the body, I tested it with all lights on and my steering wheel 'club' holding the brake pedal for over 45 minutes to see if it was fixed. Nothing else has occured and thus I think the problem may have been solved.
