I'm not trying to be a kerk, and I understand you're very knowledgable, however what you've typed and what you're stating is conflicting information. I'm trying to find out through Scion but if you can get addition information, please let us know.
*Engines using ILSAC GF-4 0W-30 (beginning with 2006 model year): 2AZ-FE Camry, 2AZ-FE Solara, 2AZ-FE highlander, 2AZ-FE RAV4 (ACA#3).
This is what the bullitin states, no more, no less. Read it over and over until you understand exactly what it says. These SPECIFIC applications are slated to use 0W-20 oil, and anything not on the list that is a 2006-2007 moder year product in the USA market will use 5W-20. I can't make it any more clear.

And it says...

"Thank you for contacting Scion.

We appreciate your inquiry regarding engine oil recommendations for your tC. Scion issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB) #EG018-06 updating engine oil recommendations for particular vehicles. The Scion tC, which is equipped with the 2AZ-FE engine, is now recommended to use ILSAC GF-4 SAE 5W-20 oil, whereas in the Owner's Manual for your vehicle it outlines the use of ILSAC SAE 5W-30 oil.

We apologize, we do not have the ability to provide copies of TSB's. You may contact your local dealer for further assistance or our Material Distribution Center at 800-622-2033.

Please feel free to contact us should you have any further questions or comments. We would be happy to assist you. You may contact us directly at 1-866-70-SCION or by email at Contact Us.

Thank you for your interest in Scion.

So the 2AZ-FE in the Camry can use 0w30, but the 2AZ-FE in the Scion cannot?

Not all Toyota dealerships use Toyota branded oils. My local one uses Quaker State. Another uses Pennzoil, and another drumps in Castrol brand.

But each of those brands have oils that meet industry specs, and any oil that meets the required spec is fine, regardless of brand.

====

As to the Camry and tC engines, THEY ARE NOT IDENTICAL.

All the information is here, it is presented as plainly and in as much detail as is possible.

Not a whole lot can be added by repeating it.

(Keep it clean.)

Now you understand the hell that is my life! Cliff notes: If you own a Scion anything, and it is a 2006 model or newer, the recommended oil has changed to ILSAC GF-4 5W-20. That's all there really is to be said about this. If you want to continue using SAE 5W-30, fine. No problem. If you want to use the newer spec oil, fine, no problem. It's all going to be OK.........OK?

Now I understand... except that I don't understand why the 2006 tCs are now able to use 20 weight, while the 2005 tCs are not.

Yeah, the TYPO in the original post is what caused the confusion, but we're all human and make mistakes. Thanks for the clarification directly from Scion SciontCya, I was about to do that myself. Scott, I respect the knowledge you were trying to pass on to us, but you were debating something that was incorrect. I know you took time to type and post this info, but next time you may want to make sure it's accurate cause that doesn't look good on you telling people they don't know how to read. Fack I hope they shut this down!

Yeah, one little mistake can cause a lot of trouble. Everyone needs to settle down and absorb the info.

One other thing that changed is the oil filter. The Toyota unit used to be:
Old Part number: 90915-10004
New Part number: 90915-YZZF1

The new one is longer and holds more oil. The new one also has a totally new design inside.

Changes were/are obviously being made. Maybe it's tighter tolerances in 2006 engines? Don't know for sure.

Back to the topic...

I'm not sure if I'm going to try the 5w20 yet on my tC. In SoCal, the summers are hot, hot , hot!

I've been reading - ad nauseam - about oils the last few months, and I'm still not sure...

I hear ya!

I am going to wait until next winter (do we even get a winter in socal??) before I consider running the 20 weight. Although the best time to use a thinner oil is early on in the engines life...hmm, Im on the fence with this one.

During the summer, Ill stick with the 5w30. I dont think anyone would be able to tell a MPG difference between the 20 and 30 weights.
