My replies are based upon conversations "over there"
Nobody really could say much more than what I did above for the 5w20 vs 5w30 question.
The use of 20 is relatively new, so we're all learning.

There's no real answer - but since Toyota says use 5w20 in the 2006 and up, I think that's your answer.

i got an 06 but there is no difference between 05 and 06 anyway... and what did you mean 3k for synthetic is overkill?

Menace: BE VERY CAREFUL - the TSB specifically stated it's for 2006's and up ONLY.
There apparently were changes made to the engines, but nobody has solid info on that - yet.
As for your FM crack, you're forgiven, but on house arrest
3k for synthetic is a topic that we argue about on BITOG forums...some folks, like me, use 3k OCIs, and some of the guys that have done UOAs are giving us a hard time for "wasting money" as those good synth oils don't break down in 3k miles.
For me, it's cheap insurance, even though there is some evidence that it can go much longer and still protect.
Up to you - do some reading and make an informed decision. Just know I'm a 3k-er, and I will support you, but remember, your 2005 is NOT to use 5w20, according to the TSB.

I have an '06... What I meant was that I'll be switching to synth after my first 3k... But I do agree with switching every 3k instead of 5k thereafter, the oil can last 10,000k but that doesn't mean it wont get dirty... and what the heck is OCI and UOK? Last, which synth is best ( I know this is up for debate) I am leaning towards amsoil...

Amsoil and M1 get the most nods.
Now though, Pennzoil has a new "Platinum" synth that people are starting to talk about.
In reality, 3k OCIs won't stress any good synth - and some claim it won't strain a dino either.
Like you, in spite of some smart folks' testing, I go for the shorter-term OCIs.

The problem with that as I see it Vlad, is that Toyota makes the engine and provides the warranty while Amsoil does not. 
Toyota gives very specific recommendations in the owner's manual on which oils to use, and using a grade of oil they do NOT recommend either in the owner's manual, repair manuals or TSBs puts you on your own...

It varies by dealer, but rest assured, it's NOT Amsoil.
BTW, the 5w20 change is not for boxes, in case anyone is wondering - unless Toyota changed those too, which I haven't heard about, but haven't looked for either

The TSB lists 5W-20 in the ILSAC GF–4 grade ONLY as the new standard for Toyota/Scion vehicles on a going forward basis, only. In other words, according to the TSB, this only applies to new vehicles built after a certain date, and those vehicles will be marked with the new requirement:
Basically, if your owner's manual or markings on your engine spec 5W-20 use it, if it specs 5W-30 use it.

I just did my oil change and then after i poured mobil 5w-30 in I saw on the oil fill cap the recommended oil.
I started it, and it seems to run fine.
But out of curiousity. I wonder if the change wasn't because of new emission laws, and not really anything done to the motor, because I am old school, and I really can't seem to beleive they would do something to the motor that would be greatly effected by a 30 to 20 change, I might be off, but I am really curious.
I read all 3 pages and I see more people worried about blowing their motor, (which if it happens it will happen to me first, xP) rather then figuring out why they changed it.

I've read - and I don't have a link handy - that the tolerances were changed and oil passages in some places were also altered from the 2005 engines.
If it was just an emissions thing, they'd have changed it for all the years, not just 06 and up.

No, I dont beleive so. They change emissions, and then the vehicles coming out that year have to abide by them. The ones that are out are out, no need to change them, the new laws might not apply to them.
