oil change....3 months???

Why do people bash the free oil changes? Its done from toyota which is a lot better than a lot of places.
When i was 16 I got my oil changed from jiffy lube and when i went to drive away oil was squirting everywhere. The mechanic said i needed, "new this and new that". They had a mechanic from next door look at my car and showed them that it was the crappy oil can. The oil guy then said, "man we told that guy 2 weeks ago that his car was messed up too".
I'll stick with a dealership, and free is fine for me.

i wouldn't let a shop change my oil.. jiffy lube especially... i'd rather go to toyota before that.

If you wait too long to change your oil, your engine dies slowly. Problems might not begin to show up until 100,000+ miles. Since you'll never reach that mileage the way you drive, there's less risk in waiting 6 months.
Do you have low mileage because your car sits in the garage, or because you never drive it more than a couple miles at a time? Some Toyotas developed a sludging problem when driven only for short distances. Toyota claims that problem is corrected, but if you're skeptical you might want to change oil more frequently.

But the trend is supposed to end soon... so everyone enjoy the prices during the short time that its left, before it starts going up again!

right now? over 20K.. had it for just over a year.... that's actually very low for me..
i used to get over 30K a year at least... but with school and such, not so much income, and gas prices... i don't get to travel as much anymore.

Here's the thing with time vs. mileage on your oil. After you have run your oil for awhile, acids begin to form and breakdown and contaminate the oil. This is a result of the combustion process...nothing you can really do about it. Regular petroleum oils will breakdown a WHOLE LOT FASTER than synthetics will. Synthetics (most) fight this problem (breaking down) many times better than dino oil.
Check your Scion's owner's manual...should say 5K. DON'T go over that if you're running regular petroleum oil!!! If you're using synthetic, you can go longer. AMSOIL warrants their products for 25K. I've got 53K on my xB, and performed my 3rd, that's right, THIRD oil change at 50K. I have oil analysis performed, and will be glad to share the results with ANYONE who's interested.
Hope this helps....just my two cents.

AS a certified mechanic, I can tell you there is no greater favor you can do your engine than frequent oil and filter changes! If you use conventional dino oil, I do recommend 3mo/3000mile oil change intervals due to the rapid deterioration of the oil. If you use synthetic oil, then 6mo/5000mile intervals should be OK, as it holds its ability to lubricate properly much longer. Either way you stay within warrenty guidelines and ensure long, trouble-free engine life. Also, clean oil helps preserve your engine seals and gaskets, so there is less leakage in the long run. But ALWAYS, no matter who does your oil changes, DEMAND that a OEM Toyota oil filter be used.... NO EXCEPTIONS!!!!!
