Default Oil Filters and Warranty

Okay so 3 weeks ago when I drove my SW tc off the lot the dealer said that I should only use toyota oil filters... or it would "VOID MY WARRANTY" anyone know if this is the truth?

There's no way that can be true. Sounds like the dealer is just trying to make sure you bring your car back to them so you can pay for their high cost oil changes.

Not only is it B.S. it is against the law for them to do that. The Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act states " tie-in sales provisions are not allowed. Such a provision would require a purchaser of the warranted product to buy an item or service from a particular company to use with the warranted product in order to be eligible to receive a remedy under the warranty"
"With regard to aftermarket parts, the spirit of the law is that warranty coverage cannot be denied simply because such parts are present on the vehicle, or have been used"
"The warranty coverage can be denied only if the aftermarket part caused the malfunction or damage for which warranty coverage is sought. Disputes in this area usually boil down to arguments over facts and technical opinions, rather than arguments over interpretations of the law."
In short - the only way it will void your warranty is if it is installed incorrectly or directly causes damage to the warranteed part or parts. I work in the automotive retail business and have seen this many times. Don't let them lie to you.

quotes are from http://www.sema.org/main/semaorghome.aspx?ID=8124
Check it out and know the laws - the dealer does and is betting that you don't

Well that dirty son of a batch. I thought that didn't sound kosher in my opinion... cuz with my last car I heard of no such thing for warranty info.
