Default Switching fluids to synthetic?

Besides the engine oil what other fluids are worth switching to synthetic? Also what brands would you suggest? Royal Purple, redline, or the regular stuff?

Thanks for any help.

Those two brands you listed seem to be highly regarded by many people. Besides oil, there is transmission fluid, clutch fluid, brake fluid (try some Motul 600), radiator fluid and even power steering fluid. Switching to synthetics will have its advantages, especially in terms of heat protection, but unfortunately, cost isn’t one of those advantages. Fortunately, besides the oil, the other fluids have a pretty long interval in-between replacements. If you plan on taking your car AutoXing, to the track, and/or strip, then the cost of switching is probably worth it for the extra protection. If you're just adamant about your car and want to protect it the best you can, then its probably worth it then too. I remember reading about someone who took his car to the track who had switched most of his fluids out to synthetics, except the power steering fluid. He said the only problems he had was that the power steering fluid had boiled over a little and that below a ½ of a tank of gas, the engine suffers from fuel starvation in hard turns.

Thanks for putting me on the right board hotlava.

Thank you for that information Thrawn, sounds good to me so far. I don't have a large amount to put into my car so I mostly just want to take good care of it.

I don't drive it too hard so switching everything out wouldn't be necessary. Possibly just the transmission fluid, and brakes to start. I do plan on upgrading my brake pads and lines so I should just get the fluid while I'm at it.

Eventually I'll get a better job but I just got out of school so I only make so much. Then I'll look into the other fluids and performance upgrades.

Any other replies are welcomed.

For coolent I have always run the normal stuff with DISTILLED water. NEVER EVER EVER (you get the point) use tap water. My saturn has 170,000 miles on the original radiator and the coolant is as clean as a new one. I usually flush it once a year or so and use a decent quality coolant with distilled (or de-ionized) water. All of my cars have had very clean cooling systems without rust issues for the life of the vehicle using this practice. The toyota stuff comes pre-mixed with de-ionized water.

Awesome I think I'm going to try the Amsoil fluids.

More questions though if you guys don't mind.

Which one?

SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Motor Oil
SAE 5W-30 XL-7500 Synthetic Motor Oil

Same for the transmission fluid...

Severe Gear 75W-90
SAE 75W-90 Synthetic Gear Lube

Servere is for harder driving conditions so should I just stick with the regular gear lube?

Same question again...

Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid
Torque-Drive™ Synthetic Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATD)

Any reccomendations for each if anyone is using them would be much appreciated.

the XL7500 is just that, 7500 mile intervals. The 5w30 synthetic is rated at 25,000 miles or 1 year. 0w30, 35,000 miles or 1 year.

I've been using AMSOIL for about 7 years, selling it for about 5 years. As for the tranny fluid, I haven't checked far enough into the tranny fluid on the Scion to see what is needed. PM me, and I'll see what I can find for you.

no matter which oil you choose to put in your car your best bet is to check it's level often and chang it out every 3-4,000 miles regardless of what the bottle say's. your car can last 300,000 miles if you change eveything regularly
