I removed the airbox lid last night to inspect and clean my air filter when I noticed there appears to be a secondary filter mounted in the airbox lid. I tried to gently pry it out but it seems pretty tight.

Before I proceeded any further I thought I would ask here. I did a search but didn't find anything.

Leave it alone. It is part of the emmissions system.

That brings up an interesting question: If it's part of the emissions system, what happens when you remove the stock intake to install a CAI?

 

You wont pass the emissions test.

But dont worry about it unless you live in CA.

yeah its that charcoal element. People say removing the charcoal element with the resonator and the funnel into the fender improves feel. but thats them.

 

It does not hurt performance and removing it will provide no gains.

The charcoal accepts and releases hydrocarbons readily. When you turn off the engine and some intake valves are open and some unburned fuel remains in the cylinder, it migrates out the open intake. These are emissions and are measured when the car is certified. The charcoal absorbs the unburned hydrocarbons and holds them till you restart the engine and then they are pulled back into the engine to be burned.

 

I would only be interested in removing it if it provided any gains either performance wise or fuel economy. I don't like to remove things just for the sake of removal. I thought maybe if it let the engine breath a bit better then what the heck.

Actually, the search feature is quite good, but one must be smarter than the search feature for it to work correctly.

I typed:

and got back 4 hits. I dont think that is too much to sort through to find the answer to a question.

Seriously, I ask a question and get sarcasm in spades. I ask you this: How was I supposed to search for "charcoal filter" when I didn't know it was a charcoal filter before I even asked my question??? See, not having that bit of information when searching is what led to so many threads in my search.

I like this forum for it's information but I have to say I have been chided more times for nonsensical things than I have in over 7 years on other forums.

You could go to Delphi Forums' Road Star Riders or just about any other forum and ask a basic question and you know what happens? Folks just answer them for you out of pure courtesy.

I used the darned search function and was overwhelmed with it's results. I had no idea that asking this question would have this result.

I might add, if you see the title of the thread and you know it's a question that's been asked so much, just avoid it.
