Default Valve adjustment??

A Toyota mechanic at the Orlando Car Show in November told me the scion xB had hydraulic valve lifters so no adjustments were necessary.
The maintenance schedule booklet that came with the car says the valves are to be adjusted every 15K. Which is correct??

your toyota tech dont know his/her cars the engines lifters are solid not hydr then to adjust them they have to remove the cams and measure the lifter bucket thickness then re install the proper size and re install and no this is not done
every 15k it would cost a grip it is done during cyl head rebiulding another unlikely scenario (with proper care)

but no adjustments!!!

if your valves need 'adjustment'
measure the lash (at each valve)
remove cams, pull out the lifters and measure the valve thickness....

if it is out of spec you have to buy a new lifter (no adjustment)...

there are 35 sizes of lifters in 0.020mm increments

but they are solid lifters

yo i have a ticking coming from my xb motor... i know its the lifters and valves... at a lower rpm like 500... (i am right on that too 500rpm) it what my car idles it sounds like a really bad clicking but when up to 1000 -4000 it is loud at 2500k quiet at 3200k and loud at 4000k... not LOUD loud but noticable from the front of the car...
should there be anything to worry about... iread about the valve clearance in the maintainece book too now that i read this im a lil disapointed because i was hoping to get the adjustment done... i just want to know if clicking in the valves and lifters normal for the 1nf-fe 1.5l motor??? i don't driver the car hard i do some interstate driving...

mods are

obx racing header
k&n cai
catbat custom 2.5" exhaust

you can't do the adjustments yourself....it requires taking out the cams and having an assortment of new lifters (of diff thickness)

take it back to the dealer for service under warranty....

i didn't mean i was goin to do it myself i was gonna have the dealer do it... anyways it could be a number of things... i have full synthetic oil im workin on 4200 on the oil... i heard synthetic never breaks down so im still 50/50 on that i think i might change it and see whats up... if that doesn't fix it maybe no back pressure on the exhaust causing the valves to burn up... that can also cause ticking... or it could be the fuel injectors... i heard they click in the echos and gt celicas.... it won't be covered under warrenty if my header and custom 2.5 "pipe caused the valves to burn... burnt valves will get slack in them and tick when pressed to release exhaust... i also think that my timing might be of by 1 degree... i never hear anyelses xb xa or echo do it and you can clearly hear mine.... im worried about taking to the dealer because of all the mods i have on the car... and they were NOT installed by the dealer i did them myself and yes they are in right... had inspected after install for leaks by a buddy

Wow dude, chill! The most common cause of a ticking noise or louder coming from within the valve cover is from some monkey bending down the metal baffle plate visible in the oil filler hole. It then contacts the camshaft causing noise. Second, the injectors do indeed make a fairly noticable ticking noise in operation and is perfectly normal. Burning the valves is RARE and should not even be considered at this point. Burned valves will cause a very rough idle, intermittant stalling at idle, a check engine light with codes for random or specific cylinder misfire and general rough engine operation. As far as adjusting the valves, for all intents and purposes consider them adjusted from the factory and never needing any more attention. If your valves need adjusting they would be the first I have encountered. I did a little repair today on a 1nzz motor in a Celica that some ___-clown over-revved ( a bunch!) by downshifting at some crazy speed , bending all the exhaust valves. These are some of them:

no i don't over rev a lot sometimes tach out but not long and only do it like once or twice a month i think the valves are burnt rough idle def but that stops when i put put my factory air box back on... dunno about that one... i do throw CEL but that is also because of my K&N typhoon CAI... i headr about them throwing cels and rough idle... that pic is crazy... the ticky is not that noticable... im just gonna cahnge the oil see what that does... most of the time it goes away for about 3k miles then it comes back... and its not so loud when you first start the car only when its at runnning temp... im not all worried about the ticking it just anoying for me sometimes... and when i sit in the parkinglot with the car idle waiting for a friend i hear people talking baout the ticking... mostly teens... i just thought of somethin else that could cause ticking... the pressure plate for the clutch... if one of the metal plates are bent enough to touch the thrown barrings it will click when it turns around to it... and when i press the clucth in some clicking goes away... not worried about that either gettin new clutch soon... thanks for the help and info... i know some toyotas click all the time but when its coming from a new car it anoying...

scott i just noticed you are in SE.. i can hit oyu up on there too later

The service manual does call for valve clearance checks at different intervals. I'm wondering who actually has them checked and has anyone ever needed to have them adjusted. There is one xB I know of that has over 120K on it and has never had this service done at all.
