waxing vs clearcoat polish
Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but my scion tc is the first new car i've ever had and i never thought much about waxing. i used to just take my jeep to the car wash and that was that. is the clearcoat polish you get at a touch free laser wash comparable to getting the car waxed? what's the difference? thanks.

No, that's just to help the water bead off. A good wax job is needed. Today's waxes are much easier than back in the day. Buy something good, like Mother's, Meguiars or Zymol. Personally, I steer clear of the Turtle Waxes and Armor-All brands. You don't need any machinery, a simple hand application and removal works best, IMO. If the paint feels rough to the touch (lightly slide the back of your fingers across it), you may want to use a Clay Bar first. Also easy to use and the results are AMAZING.

waxes are protectants, polishes are abrasive products that remove clearcoat in order to remove/diminish swirls, scratches, waterspot etchings, etc. They're two completely different products.

I went to Wal-Mart and bought a wool wash mit, some microfiber towels, two buckets, and some NXT wash. One bucket was full of clean water.
I just washed my car panel by panel, rinsing each one off after soaping and making sure I dried it properly. Worked out great.
