Default Whats the difference here?

Mobil1 synthetic 5W30 vs Mobil1 synthetic 5W30 Extended Performance. More than just the superficial fact that the extended says that it can go 15K (not that I would), what is the difference between the 2 oils, and if I plan on changing it at 5K, which should I go with? Can I get like 7K out of the extended?

**I'm fairly ignorant to the topic, but I am going to learn how to / start doing my own oil changes! Thanks all!

What is the difference between Mobil 1® Extended Performance and Mobil 1?

Mobil 1 Extended Performance formulas are designed specifically for today's longer service intervals and are guaranteed to protect for up to 15,000 miles or one year.

Mobil 1 Extended Performance has a unique formulation with a boosted level of protection and performance. Mobil 1 Extended Performance, with the Advanced SuperSyn System, contains 50 percent more SuperSyn than Mobil 1. (Updated March 2006)
i would just use the regular one. 5K change. get good oil filter.

if i were to use the extended.. i'd get the extended oil filter they offer.. and then i'd push it around 10K. but make sure you get a good filter to compliment that... otherwise.. you may find yourself needing to change it out before the oil change interval.

Yea, I have the mobil1 extended performance oil filter as well.

So basically, with that filter, I can go 5K with the the regular and 10K with the extended is what you guys think?

I did, just still feeling without enough info in comparison between the two. I'm thinking of using the regular for the 1st time, and change the oil after 3K as to eliminate any old remnance of oil. After that (since they are the same price), I will use the extended and go 5K unless someone tells me that this is a bad idea!

After much research, the extended performance is superior just in that it is the same thing basically that can simply last longer and its the same price!

It's never a good idea to go more than 5K between oil changes regardless of the type of oil you use. Oil gets dirty and contaminated. 4 Quarts are not gonna hold that much dirt and not hurt the engine. Just because they say you can go that far, doesn't make it right. Unless they are making your payments. lol

I had the same choice as you about a month ago and I bought Extended Performance and I plan on using it for the advertised 15k miles. I also have the Mobil 1 Extended Performance filter.

15k seems like a bit too much for me. Even my dads benz tells him only 10K and the car comes standard with synthetic. I don't think anyone would recommend 15K...just because it can POSSIBLY do it without getting too dirty and nasty, doesn't mean it should go that far....thats just my advice after speaking to many experts on the subject!

Your probably right, but never the less, I'm gonna take it up to 15k and see how bad it is when it comes out. I want to see if the 15k advertisment is correct. It shouldn't get dirty because the filter is ment to do 15k so I guess I'll just have to wait and see...I'll report back in about 14.5k miles, lol.

Have you ever actually felt and smelled used oil with only 5K on it. It's freakin nasty. And you want to make that same oil do 2 more duty cycles through your new motor. Guess it's your car and you can do what you want.... Good luck with that

A filter only removes particles above a certain size. A filter does not remove very fine particles, or the acids and chemicals that are by-products of combustion. A filter does not keep the oil clean as in "clear".

At 15,000 miles on synthetic you will see some very black smelly oil and nothing will be wrong. There is nothing to wait and see. Mobil is only guaranteeing that there will be the same wear as petroleum oil at it's change intervals. Mobile at 15K is like petroleum oil at 7.5K for US carmakers. But Scion has 5K intervals - you should ask Mobil or Toyota about not changing a high-revving little Scion for 15K miles.

Do that 15K change ten more times, and there might some difference in your engine. It may run OK, but drivers behind you might notice a faint blue haze from your tailpipe ;-) The engine will be worn but I doubt that Mobil will be interested.

If you bought this xB with your own money and intend to keep it a long time, you should change the oil more often.
