xB making noises from engine
anyone notice a hissing from the engine at a stop.... with the windows down you can only hear it when your next to a wall... like a drive through.. when the windows are up can't hear that noise but another one is noticable... its a ticking... that one im not to worried about becuase i hear them on the echos and other scions... thats the famous toyota tap... just a lil faint... but that hissing sounds like an exhaust leak from the header... a friend of mine the other day said that he seen puffs of black smoke when i shift gears... i normaly shift my gears at 4k sometimes i go a lil higher... i get better gas millage when i shift at 4k... already tested that lol... let me know what you think... i don't want to take it to the dealers and have them charge just to look at it and tell me i need brakes or some BS like that...

Do you have an aftermarket intake? That's what usually is the source of the hissing.
If you do alot of city driving, the black soot your friend sees is normal. Its just a normal build-up that is being blown out w/ the higher pressure. Now, if it was blue-white smoke, I would be worried.
I'm not an expert, just offering some insight.

the hissing is timed with the stroke of the car its not constent like an intake... no aftermarket and i only have 18k miles... i do have an aftermarket exhaust im not using the factory piping i have 2.5" pipe from the cat back with a straight through muffler design from 3A Racing... sounds great... maybe not enough back pressure burning my valves???? but i have noticed after i change the oil all of these noises go away for about 1k miles then they start to come back one after another... i checked the oil on the stick its at right level and not burnt but smells like it... im 1200 miles into the oil change now and oil looks new... wtf is going on
