2014 tC Sunroof Shattered!! Pictures..
#21
Okay, so the exact thing happened to me last night in my 2013 TC RS 8.0 while driving home from work. Sounded like a gunshot above my head, glass went everywhere. I am heading to the dealership today, this is for sure a Scion issue--there were no other cars or semi trucks around me that could have kicked up a rock.

2012 Scion tC Sunroof burst..
I have a 2012 Scion tC, perfect condition until this last Thursday morning. I was commuting to work, windows up, A/C is off, sunroof and visor closed, I was only a few minutes into my drive when I heard what sounded like a shotgun go off next to my face.
This was followed by the sound of exploding glass and then huge gust of wind. I clearly new a window had broken so I pulled over. After stepping out of the vehicle I realized that the window broke from the inside outward and you can tell by the pictures
it exploded outward.
After doing only 30 seconds of research I found numerous cases of the exact same scenario and description. Toyota is denying that they have a problem but I wont settle for that being the case. I am gathering evidence now of tC drivers this has happened to,
because I want to make sure this issue is fixed before it happens again to myself or someone else and causes injury or an accident.

2011 tC shattered/exploded
The same thing happened to my car on the interstate on my way to class just the other morning. I'm having a hard time finding someone to replace it. I don't have a good relationship with my closest dealership which is another story in itself... How did everything turn out for you guys?

I was driving my 2014 Monogram tC this morning and the front glass busted. I was on the interstate and it sounded like a gun shot and the sound of glass going everywhere. When I got to work an hour later, i saw my glass busted.
I am going to take my car to the dealership in the morning and see what they will do.

This is crap people! I own a 2014 tC and this happened to me a couple of months ago. I have since kept it parked in the garage. When it happened my entire family was in the car. The sound was that of a gunshot, so much so, I reached back to wake my children up to make sure they were not shot.

Wow, if I knew about this issue I'da thought twice when buying mine (used) Extreme temps up here in the North Country. But that might not be the issue.
As a retired Mech Engineer (Automotive) and based on my experience with my 2013 tC, I'd say chassis flex is the trigger for the ruptured glass.
Seeing only the last set of pics in this thread, one can clearly see the damage is concentrated where it was mounted to its frame. The glass was asked to twist beyond it's moduls & fractured along it's outer edges/mounting points.
Safety glass is wonderful, but since it's per-stressed for strength and all that pressure being released in a micro-second, it makes a helluva racket. And a mess.
So where did that flex come from? Good question Chip...
My opinion: the tC's chassis has/had a higher standard of flexion that wasn't accounted for during the sub-component design phase.
Or a change was made to accommodate manufacturing that introduced a change that may have been missed/underestimated = pop goes the glass.
Or the interface between the sub-component (sliding glass frame) & the chassis allowed for unusually high amount of motion. This is more likely...
I noticed my roof glass panels (2013 tC) had an unusually large gaps between the panes. I wondered about that as I placed foam strips between them to narrow the gaps & cut down on wind noise.
BEFORE
And AFTER:
(don't mind the white fluff - that was tape residue & can barely be seen with the naked eye)
For Toyota to "recognize" the issue they'd hafta admit a bigger problem and open themselves to liability contention beyond reasonable expectations.
Fair 'nuff. Still, they should'a just fixed the individual cases & brushed it under the carpet. Bad business decision on their part. Opinion only.
Cheers

It's a Auto Industry Wide Problem, Ask Ford, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia, Honda, Cadillac. Some 13 Car Manufacturers has a history of Shattered Sun Roofs, according to NHTSA.
At least 859 complaints about Exploding Sunroofs have been filed in the past 22 years.
Ask Why the Government and Why the Courts are dragging their feet on this Still Ongoing Problem:
