Anyone drive a motorcycle?
I moved to a new neighborhood that allows one spot per resident. I see a few people have a motorcycle they park in the same spot at their car. Since most of my driving is to work and back I was thinking of getting my cycle license and getting one just for going to work and back and to save on gas.
Ive looked at scooters and mopeds, but in VA if its more than 50ccs it needs a motorcycle license. Like wise for 3 wheeled electric vehicles.
So, how hard is the license to get? Is it fun or any regrets on a motorcycle to travel 13 miles a day one way? Should I sitll look at scooters vs motorcycles at the larger ccs for fuel economy?
Thanks

check out this site,
I want to learn too. But my girlfriend don't trust me on the motorcycle.
Anyone know how to hard is it to steal a motorcycle? I don't have a garage. I am afraid someone might just steal it on a truck.

My neighbors use a lock cord to a lamp post or the hitch of their suv. Many people where I live have an suv and bike. I have the xa with hitch. I was going to buy a full face helmet, gortex rain suit and one of those cable locks to lock my bike to a power or lamp posts, both of which exist where I work and live. Looking at the price of scooters and small motorcycles, they are about the same price, just differenc ein top speeds.
I looked at a 50 cc scooter by yamaha the other day. It was sold, but the mpg rating was 119.

get a wheel lock. goes on the brake and keeps the wheel from turning when its on there. just dont forget to take it off!
As for theft, the best solution is to get full insurance b/c if they want it, they are gonna take it.
Def. take the MSF. I learned a lot. plus, in texas, it counts as the driving test so you dont have to go through the DPS/DMV.

I have a Yamaha Zuma (50cc scooter) that I bought in early June. I absolutely LOVE it. It's a blast to ride and it gets phenominal gas mileage. I can ride it to work and back all week on less than one gallon of gas! It'll do about 43 mph on the flats and a tad faster down hill. I wouldn't feel safe taking it on roads where traffic typically travels over 45, but my commute is all on roads that are posted 35 or less. Here in PA, a 50cc scooter has to be inspected, licensed and insured, but you don't need a motorcycle license. You do need one for anything over 50cc. Here's the one I have:

As for your weight concern, if you're under 250 lbs. you'll be fine. If you're between 250 and 300 lbs you might want to move up to a 150cc or a 250cc scooter. If you're over 300 lbs., you better check the weight limit on any scooter you look at. What you'll find is that even the little 50cc models do fine with a lot of weight on flat ground, but it will die out quickly on hills. I'm pretty light (155 lbs.) and I can maintain 40 MPH even on uphill grades, but if my wife is on the back (an additional 115 lbs.) my scooter will struggle to maintain 35 uphill.

I got my license in IL, and it is simple. If you can ride a bike you can ride a motorcycle. And as teamben stated the 250cc ninja is a great started bike for the stated reasons. And riding a bike is verrrrrrrrrrrryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy fun lol.
Be safe tho. GL!

Its fun and easy to get your Moto lisence. You say it will just be for to and from work, but then you will find people to ride with, and end up riding 200-500 miles every weekend.
Thats what happened to me, its an addiction on a whole nother level. Get a bike, You wont regret it. Just becareful and try your best not to crash cus that you will reggret.

To add to yours.. the law just changed on July 1st.... the DMV will no longer let you get your license through them. You can get a temp. by passing the computer test, but not your license.
You are now required to take the MSF course. Which i highly recommend.
With people switching to scooters and bikes due to gas, that was a good law to pass. Makes the roads a tad bit safer.
I just picked up a used 2006 Ninja 250.... 4100 miles.. immaculate condition. I'm averaging over 60mpg and I'm hard on the throttle. When i go soft, i can get well over 70
