if ur putting a new computer together and all you have is a sata drive, is it the same as with the ide? Just physically connect it and the computer will recognize it?

Yep but you need to make sure the new computer has a motherboard that has SATA ports on it

and if anyone ever noticed unstability between ide's over 120gb. thats why I use sata over 120gb. I think they are mroe reliable. As for speed, get a raptor at 10k rpm. those reallly rock lol.

ide vs 120gb? that doesnt make any sense... a connection vs a disk size?

The hardware will be recognized by the BIOS as long as your motherboad has native SATA.

If you are loading WinXP onto the drive, then you may have to prepare the SATA drivers on a floppy or thumbdrive. I don't think WinXP Pro SP2 discs support SATA automatically.

However, if you're just adding a SATA drive (it's not the boot disc), then just plug and pray......I mean, play.

i actually havent noticed that, but all the drives i have that are over 120GB that are IDE are Seagate, and Ive never had a problem with theirs. I have had a 200GB Seagate in my xbox for about 2 years or possibly more, and Ive never had a problem, same goes with the IDE HDs that are north of 120GB in my systems, never an issue, however I do point out they are seagates (quiet and reliable)

agreed, my newest desktop has 2 74GB raptors in RAID-0 with a 300GB SATA Seagate for storage and the RAID array is for OS / Programs. That system screams! (doesnt hurt that I have 4GB of ram and no Pagefile (current operating systems dont support more than 4gb.... well atleast current retail versions of windows)

hahaha awesome. I kinda got the same setup. 2 74gb raptor with raid 0

2 120gb's and a 200gb

2gb of ram though but I got a X2 Dual Core 4800+ Cpu so that makes up for it

Uhhmmm... Windows XP and 2000 Professional run slower when you add more than 2GB RAM. Tom's Hardware did an exhaustive test with everything from 256MB up to 4GB of RAM. You probably can't notice it vs.2GB, but it's there.

Also, no application individually can address more than 2GB(?) underneath those operating systems.
