Canon Rebel XT vs Nikon D40

Both are good cameras and will do very well for you. I use Nikon cameras, I have liked them for a long time. My current bodies are a D70s and a D80, the D80 is an awesome camera for the money.

The D80 is a great camera. I think they consider it to be a lower end professional camera.
I have the D50 myself, it's been discontinued for a while. But I managed to find a new one in the box at a Sears store and got it for $400 OTD.

i got a d40 kinda going into photography blind and not knkowing how to use the camera, and now know all its functions and can really take good pictures, so the d40 to me was easy to use and more simplistic, and my friend has a XTi and used it prior to the d40 and still like my d40 over it.

Well, thanks for all the info guys.
I just bought a Canon Rebel XT on ebay along with a 28-90mm lens (as opposed to the kit lens which is a 18-55mm). The deal I got also included a 1gb compact flash card, 2 tripods (one table top and one full size), a carrying bag, a lens cleaning kit, and a memory card wallet.
All this was for $466.80. $11.80 of that I had to find in change haha.

Definitely, AND, it's brand new. I was really amazed with the price. I think most places that I've found the camera with the kit lens and nothing else, it was usually like $500.

I ws going through the same dilemma about a year ago, i ended up going with the D40 however, I really liked the bigger screen it offered, but the XT is a fantastic camera. I have about a year and half undermy D 40 And im about ready to buy a new lense or 2. The kit lense is fantastic but has its limits i really want a fisheye but they don't make any AF-S ones yet, so i would have to manually focus which isn't a huge deal but when you spend the money you want it all to work.

^^^ Fo sho yo.
The D40 seemed cheaper almost everywhere I looked, but it's lack of automatic exposure bracketing was my main reason for going with the XT.
I really wanna be able to do stuff like this:
A friend of mine with the XT is looking to get a wide angle lens for his sometime soon. And the preacher at my church has a D80 I think.

^^^ Time exposures are one of the main reasons I chose to step up to a SLR camera. I have some great shots of Seattle at night with 15-25 second exposures. The XTI is great, I absolutely love it. Hope you are happy with yours!
