Default Debate: Should marijuana be legalized?

Should the federal gov legalize marijuana?
Why/why not?

If anyone has updated figures feel free to post them but this is what I found in 30 sec.
Miron Report
Report done by an economics proffesor of Harvard University as of June 2005 estimated that lifting the prohibition would save 7.7 billion in national expenditure 5.3 of which would accrue to state and local governments.

Heck no! If they legalize pot, you won't be able to find a bag of Doritos anywhere!

damn hippes....hahaha J/K
It should be legalized.....its way more passive of a drug then alcohol.....but unfortuately the stigma that surrounds pot from older generations will take years to overcome....first step is medical

the dorrito comment had me laughing pretty hard too.

I really never understood why it's illegal while alcohol IS legal....doesn't make any sense to me. I'm no scientist but I really believe that alcohol is way worse than the plant.

California is past the medical stage and already several beach cities have instructed thier officers to make marijuana enforcement their lowest priority.

Is that possible? I went to edit but it doesn't give me the option to edit the poll.

Had an Econ professor a quarter century ago ask "Why are illegal drugs illegal?". Nobody came up with a good answer other than taxes and morals and they weren't good enough of an answer.

Billions are spent housing drug criminals and the value of the drug enables gang violence and weapons. Eliminate the law and value plummets, not to mention the death toll from tainted drugs. You buy them off the shelf with a certification.

Me? Never done any of it but figure if you can drink yourself to death why is it not legal to do other drugs? It is obvious that we haven't won the "war on drugs". Change tactics.

legalising weed, would legalise mass hemp production.

Legalising hemp production would nearly destroy the cotton and timber industry, and those companies have very powerful lobbyists.

An acre of Hemp makes the same amount of paper as 4 acres of trees, and how long does it take for trees to grow?

Hemp makes as good or better quality of clothes as cotton, and doesn't strip the soil like cotton does, so you don't have to do crop rotations.

in the name of the environment mass hemp production should be legal.

a wise man, or dave chappelle, once said:
"Hey,Hey,Hey,Hey...Smoke Weed Everyday."

I would like to see all drugs, alcohol included, illegal. Then, I would like everybody to obey that law. But this isn't a perfect world.

I know that pot can be just as addictive to people as any other drug. Sure, not physically like heroin but psychologically.

When you use pot all day long, everyday, you loose the ability to cope with emotions without being high. You forget how to deal with sadness on your own. You forget how to have fun without being high. You become uncomfortable doing normal, everyday tasks. Most of your friends smoked pot... now you can't hang around them because pot is such a big part of that relationship and a big part of them. You get lonely. These are many of the reasons one would relapse from ANY drug... and pot surely fits into that picture.

I think people who smoke pot can, especially if they have an addictive personalities, have many of the same problems as someone who is addicted to a "harder" drug. Perhaps not some of the more drastic issues like selling their body... but that naturally comes when the pot doesn't get them high enough and they go on to something that will.

I take pot way more seriously than most people. I would do anything on earth to be one of the majority who can smoke pot and not have any sort of problems in life from doing so. I crave it now as I type this. I lost cars, credit, family members... it almost ruined my life. Yet, if I were to be offered a hit right now... I'd have absolutely no confidence that I'd turn it down.

I'd love to see people be able to use it for medical purposes. I'm not sure about everywhere else but our laws aren't set in place to where this can happen very well. People who grow and sell for this purpose can still and do still get in trouble... blah blah blah.

I think that, if anything, our attitudes and thoughts of the drug need to change. It's not harmless. Even if you are able to just enjoy it and not have it rule or ruin your life, it's still not good for your health, at all.
