Default DSLR cameras

hi, so i've been really wanting to get into photography and i would like to know everyones opinion on what camera to start with? i'm looking in the 500-700 range, also what would be good lenses to use. i plan on doing nature, cars, and metro life like building ranges and what not. if anyone could point me in the right direction that would greatly be appreciated.

There are plenty of entry level DSLRs in that thread. Most of those are with a D40 and XTi (or w/e the Canon entry is).

Just look at the D40 and the entry Canon, pick the one you feel more comfortable with.

Check out the Pentax K200D. And by check it out, I mean read the specs and read reviews on it. You'll be impressed. The best part (IMO) is the image stabilization which is built into the camera BODY. Many cameras need special lenses that cost a fortune to get that feature. Because it's in the body of the K200D any old lens you put on it is stabilized. The price is right too.

easy fix for lack of image stabalization is using a tripod.

True...if you have one with you. I don't carry one everywhere I go. With in-body stabilization I can take hand held shots zoomed to 300mm and they come out beautiful. Shake reduction won't make up for poor technique, but it is a feature I would never want to do without now that I've experienced it.

My Nikon lenses came with it built in, cept for my macro lens, which shouldn't even be used for shots under 1/20sec.

Yeah, that's the point I was making. You can buy lenses with built-in shake reduction but they cost a lot more than lenses without it. The obvious advantage to having it in the body instead is that any lens you put on is stabilized.

I believe that Nikon and Canon have the most to offer in terms of lenses. SLR's are all about the lenses. Good lenses are rarely cheap so beware, it's a very addicting thing.

Personally, I'm a Nikon guy.
