So in paris, if you see a male & woman walking down the street holding hands you're not going to assume they're a couple? please.
jumping to that kind of an assumption is based on the kind of environment you are raised... if ppl are raised in a lifestyle where its fine for plutonic friends to hold hands then no, no one is going to assume that... but if an american were to go to a more open society... like a city in europe... then of course THEY will think so... because its not the acceptable norm HERE.
similarly if someone from there, were to come here... they would probably think that discussing this issue is ridiculous and pointless... we're talking about holding hands not grabbing @$$es...
i'm sorry, im still not buying a 25 year old guy and a 25 year old female holding hands in public is not going to generally be viewed as they're a couple.

and sure, i realise in europe something are different. But let's say a french/italian/english/german 45 year old married guy was to see his wife holding hands with some other guy her own age in public. "O, honey, we're just friends" is not reality. Say his friends saw this guy's wife in public, holding some other guys hand. Would they think nothing? would they not say anything to that husband?

This is not american social thing. This is a man/woman thing and in europe guys are alot more "old school" when it comes to their relationship with women. I'd love to hear someone who has lived in europe as an adult, in an adult relationship.

Acutally, in Korea it's quite common for males to hold hands. It's not ___.

I am going to have to say that it depends on where you are from. But in America - couples... or really good friends.

Who are you to say we're naive?? You don't know either of us.

Maybe I've been to foreign places that have educated me on their culture. Depending on how that male and female are holding hands will probably tell you if they're together or not. The male or female might be ___, and have no attartion what's so ever to the opposite sex. In S.Korea guys hold hands with guys and girls with girls, but it's the way that they do it.

Just to make a note... I believe the quest was a girl and guy.. not a guy and guy or girl and girl.

That's all.

well.. thanks for all the responses.. it was jus to prove a point to my friend.. don't want to blow his spot with details.... all this said enough..

this is what i think... when would you ever need to hold someone's hand when they didn't mean anything to you? only when walking across the street is the only thing i can think of.

My wife and I do too. It's the way it should be.

Every cultur is different, but here in the US it's mostly a couple’s thing. If you're married or seriously involved with someone, it's probably best you aren't holding hands with anyone else. BUT...if you're not married or in a serious relationship, go for it. But be aware that it will probably be viewed differently by each person. If you take a guy and a girl who are just good friends and place them in a casual situation where they end up holding hands, here's what's going through their minds:

Her: Awww...this is sweet. He's such a good friend. I'm glad I know him.

Him: Hmmmm....maybe this will lead to something!!! She's pretty hot. Maybe she wants me.
