Yeah, the dealer called to tell me that everything was approved for warranty replacement, and that rental car fees will also be covered. I gotta say that Smithtown Scion was all over this and handled it well. Props to them. Actually, I shouldn't really jinx myself since I didn't actually get the car back yet, but it seems like it's going smoothly.

I'm shopping for a new car this weekend. I will miss my tC dearly. (I will be looking at an xA so maybe I'll stay in the Scion family.)

I really feel for you, that's odd how it would just shatter like that. At least It wasn't a rock the size of your head coming at you from outta nowhere. ( https://www.scionlife.com/forums/vie...947&highlight= ). I'm glad that you are ok and that the dealer replaced it without any hastle. Good luck!

What was the purpose of raising the wind deflector after the fact?

I guess the mechanism thinks the roof is open since the glass is not there. I found it humorous as well.

Well, today I got a call from the dealer to say that the whole roof assembly has to be replaced, not just the glass, so it will take a couple more days. I'm thinking "like duh", of course it's not the glass - metal rods and bars were all over the inside of the car. Oh well. I'm going to put a call in to Scion customer service and try to find out some more info on this, like if the '06 roof is any different than the '05, and if the new glass they're putting in is any different than the old glass. I'd really like to find a way to keep the tC, but I'm finding it difficult to convince myself that the car is safe (maybe not *all* tCs, but I'm convinced MY tC is NOT safe.)

If the roof was closed, why is the front wind diflector part up? Or did something mechanical in the sunroof break, causing the glass to shatter? Just my thoughts on the issue. Maybe someone over tightened a nut and it decided to bust. lol. Glad to hear its warrantied. The xA's aren't bad and I never see nearly as many as them as I do tC's.

I had something similar happen but to my xB and it was the Driver side window and it was just parked in the drive way. I had the garage door open, I was on my way out and boom!

That's an excellent point that I didn't think of. I had just assumed that the glass went and then the deflector went up. It didn't occur to me that something failed first, the deflector maybe goes up, and then the glass shatters. Interesting.

I strongly disagree about the extreme temp difference being the reason for glass to shatter. I know for this particular person it definitely isn't.

Even if it's hot as hell outside and your running your A/C full blast, i don't believe it's going to shatter any glass. the A/C doesn't just freeze the cabin in the instant, it takes a bit of time for the cabin to get cool gradually.
It's not like all of a sudden the cabin is freezing. And if that's the case, all of our sunroof would shatter in the summer time. It's only extreme if your roof was frozen shut and you pour boiling water on it or something.

another incident is when the roof shatters during a hot day under the blazing sun with all the window rolled up. I'm not 100% sure, but i don't think our car is air tight.
Which is why i don't think it's b/c of the interior air pressure increased by heat that makes the glass shatter due to pressure.

I'm leaning more to the fact that the tC's body integrity got the worst possibly rating according to Consumer Reports.
Maybe our body structure is so poor and flexible that the heat expanding the metal or body flex during a drive just breaks the glass.

I'm just guessing, i haven't found any real data on why our sunroof shatters. but imo the glass does feel more fragile and thin compared to other models
