Motorcycle Insurance
So a while back I started a thread asking some general stuff about different bikes, what you guys who had them liked, and disliked, etc.... So with my 18th b-day coming up in October, I've been looking more and more into getting one. Especially now as several of my friends have taken some interest in getting bikes of their own as well.
So I was wondering what insurance you guys have gone with for your bikes. What kind of coverage are you getting, and at approximately what annual cost?
Also, I remember hearing something about a motorcycle safety course that helped to reduce your rates or something along those lines. Any info on that, such as where? And how much would it lower my rates? (assuming that I remember hearing correctly that it does lower them.)
Thanks guys...

I recently purchased myself a Yamaha R6... And man.. lemme tell u.. its the best thing in the world.. no regrets at all! However.. an R6 is just my start out bike.. i will move on to something better soon... Insurance for me is $400 a year... With progressive.. and thats with one traffic ticket!... so for you.. it could be cheaper!... and since i work in the Medical field.. theres no reason for me to purchased 2 way insurance... so therefore i purchased only liability... i think its $600 a year with 2 way insurance... anyways... the basic riding course. YES! it does save u money on insurance to finish the class... i think its about 5%.. but hey thats better then nothing.. they will also provide you with a completion card that allows you to take the card to any bike store and receive 15% off on all of your purchases.. and if your still driving a scion like I am... you can combine the two transportation and receive an ever higher decrease on your insurance.. and as far as gas goes.. it takes under $14 dollars to fill up my tank with 50-55mpg.. Well.. i hope this helps... and Ride safe

The courses are with the MSF, Motorcycle Safety Foundation. In addition to a small discount on insurance, here in NC it also exscused you from having to take the road test. Took 2 days to complete, with ___ time on both days. Well worth it if you're a young rider, or someone looking to drop their rate.

I'm mainly in it for the insurance rates. I've ridden dirtbikes for 10 years, so..........lol.
So I'm guessing you still have to take a written test. What's it like for NC?

I recall it being pretty easy. They have a booklet you can pick up from the DMV to tell you what you need to know. Granted, this was like 10 years ago.
As for the courses, you can check with your local shops too. Some of them may offer the MSF courses, and you get to ride better bikes. The HD dealer here taught it on Buell Blasts, -B(e) Last-. Still, it would have been better than the Rebels at the community college.

It helps to have riding expierence, I loved riding my 600RR.
I have a years worth of expierence and insurance companies still consider me a new rider, they want at least 3 years exp here in cali.... so rates for a "new rider" will be more expensive.
When I had my bike I was paying 1000/yr with McGraw Specialty insurance

my friend on his ninja 250 pays about 300 something a year, liability only and he took the msf thing with me, but in cali, we kind of have to since we have to take that in place of the road test. the class is actually pretty fun, the on-the-range part at least, even though we took it in the middle of summer under the not-so-nice socal sun.

he means if you own the bike out right you can just put Liability insurance on it, which wont end up costing an arm and a leg, but when you go down and you WILL GO DOWN if the bike gets totalled your screwed out of the money you payed for the bike.

Oh ok, gotcha. A while back I entered some random names and stuff (although I did use my zip code, age, and other things I knew would decrease the price accuracy if i faked) to get insurance quotes from different companies without all the calls and emails later. I was getting quotes of about 200-400 a year, and that was with minimal coverage.
