Total BS. If you care, write a letter or place a phone call. Yes this is real *LOL* Wish I could make this stuff up.

The idea is great in some respects concerning certain animals that are invasive, however the method of delivery / plan is ridiculous, borderline wacko.

And yes, I love my pets which is why I made this post. I own 1 boxer, 3 cats & am in deep in the saltwater reef hobby.

What is HR 669?
H.R. 669 stands for House Resolution 669 and is titled "The Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act". It is a bill currently before Congress that if passed will change the way that the US Government classifies animal species that are not native to the United States. H.R. 669 will make it illegal to breed and sell many animals that are very common in the pet trade.

Why should you care about HR 669?
Anyone with pet fish, birds, reptiles, or small mammals will be affected by this bill. Any company selling product or services for pet fish, birds, reptiles or small mammals will be affected by this bill. Would you be impacted by "The Nonnative Wildlife Invasion Prevention Act"?

* Virtually all fish in an aquarium are not native to the United States
* Most pet birds are species not native to the US
* Most reptiles kept as pets are not native to the US
* Hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs and ferrets are not native to the US

What can you do to stop HR 669?
Pet owners support the concept of a risk based approach to non-native imports, unfortunately H.R. 669 as drafted does not provide a constructive way forward.

You can help by standing up and making your voice heard. Let your Representative know that you oppose H.R. 669 as drafted and the financial and/or emotional effect it will have on you, or your friends, or your family members if it passes. The link below will allow you to send an email to your Representative in Congress and even give you the option to follow up with a phone call.

I don't know enough about this yet to voice any strong opinion for either side, but I will say that there are two sides to every debate. I'm pretty sure the purpose for this piece of legislation wasn't just to be mean and stop little Billy from getting a hamster. The introduction of non-native species of wildlife to an area can be absolutely devastating. Look at the current problem in the Florida everglades with pythons. Just a few years ago someone released a non-native fish called a Snake's Head into a lake in Maryland. They had to poison the entire lake and drain it because if that fish had somehow gotten into the local waterways it could have wiped out several indigenous species. I would imagine this is the type of problem they are trying to solve.

I agree totally which is why I stated "The idea is great in some respects concerning certain animals that are invasive, however the method of delivery / plan is ridiculous, borderline wacko. "

Read deep into it, way to much for me to write up and try to explain. You have smart and stupid ways of doing everything. Personally I do not think the bill will ever pass the way it is worded. However if ignorance is ignored, then there is a chance.

I clicked on the link you have there but it still doesn't tell me much. The problem is real so I'm not sure what a "good" answer would be. How do you allow people to own these animals and be sure that irresponsible owners wont let them escape or intentionally release them into the local ecosystem? I'm curious to hear what you think would be the best way to handle the situation.

In the link contains links to many other locations Take a look around.

Also the processes are already in place for illegal animals. This bill simply bans all animals from being imported until they get approved.

I for one am definitely not here to debate the subject, I have little time. You guys can read for yourself and make your own conclusions. I have come to mine

Here are just a couple of links. Google also works.

OK..I read the first 4 or 5 of those links. I think I have the general idea of what is being proposed. I'm not here to argue or debate this topic either. I just think it's an interesting problem. We have a real and serious issue at hand that needs to be dealt with. I honestly don't see a good way of doing that without hurting the petshop industry and/or responsible pet owners. It sucks, but that's kind of how I see it. That's why I asked if you had any better ideas.

Agreed. Some animals can really screw up an ecosystem. Look up the lion fish mess that supposedly started when an aquarium broke open during a hurricane and the fish washed into the ocean. However there are correct ways of going about things and poor ways. A lame analogy would be a recall on a car for defective brake pads. Yes it is super serious, but you do not crush every car on the road "just in case" You take a look at the specific cars and fix the issue.

Anyways my lifestyle would be drastically altered by this bill so it hits me harder.
