Its a nice entry level DSLR, another one that you may wanna compare it with is the REbel XTI.. 40D nikon I think doesnt have an autofocus motor so you need a lens with autofocus motor if you need autofocus, im not so sure with 40Dx though.. If you like it go ahead you cant go wrong, its way better than the most expensive point and shoot

these guys have the same kit for $80 less. Minus the bag and useless software. I've bought from them before they are great. I have a D80 and love it.

EDIT: I just noticed that the 55-200mm lens doesn't have VR like the one in the costco deal... so that makes the costco deal seem pretty good... if you want the VR.

i have the d80 and love it also...
but if you don't really care, make sure you get the VR.... the pics are sooo clear even w/o a tripod.... (unless you have shaky hands), but yeah, COSTCO has an amazing return policy if something goes wrong... like if you accidentally drop a lens

id say if you have the money go for it! i was just very recently looking into cameras (i ended up with an canon XT) and this was one of the worthy competitors. the great part about this deal is that you get 2 lenses and one with image stabilization, which runs for about an extra 250 atop of the usual 700+ d40x kit; so you actually save quite a bit. id say go for it :D. if your a canon person like myself, there are good reasons to go xt more than XTi . lol. GO FOR IT! :D ahha

Remember good pics its not always the camera, it about the photographer w/ a decent lens.
So yeah, thats a good deal right there so get it.
here's a few sample of mine.. on the not so good Kit lens..

canon ftw! haha. i wouldve got the xti but it was up there as far as pricing went and i felt that the xt was better for my application. functionality to nikon yes, but as far as user interface, i like the feel of canon's menu better (or at least vs the d80).

And yeah xt pretty much has same quality as xti except for lil things like 10mp,better lcd, auto sensor cleaning and such but basically same camera
lol Nikon vs. Canon as I said is a never ending debate.. but as I said in reality, its not about the camera its the eye of the photgrapher.. I've read tons of reviews each one gives different conclusion.. But the 3 things you should consider more rather than debating canon vs nikon 1. how comftable are you using the camera, yea the feel 2. application- sports, landscape etc 3. price.. and plus its not about nikon and canon but what model/kind.
Talkin bout reality, both make great cameras, an entry level DSLR can make good quality image as the top of the line DSLR cameras its when talking those to the extremes that shows the big diffrence but unless you are a nerd, comparing numbers and very little details will be least of your concern.. just go ahead take nice photos and have fun.

^ well said ace.
as for the xti and the xt... i saw some comparisons b/w the two's images... since they sqeeze 2mp more on the same sensor the pictures tend to be a little bit softer and more noisy. but of course that was at a zoom that would show even the slighteset diffrence. not to mention i dont really plan on printing anything bigger than a 8x10. lol
