java... I think a focused BJ Penn is definitely better than GSP, but remember we haven't seen a truly focused GSP yet either. Serra woke him up, but he's still tentative. That might kill him against Penn, who'll pounce on every mistake. But pound for pound, I'd argue Miguel Torres is the best mma fighter out there... even better than Silva.
good way to look at it in that we havent truely seen a focus gsp either! should be a great fight! he who makes the first and only mistake will lose.

id say miguel torred has the ability, skill and the makings to be the greatest pound for pound but it jsut inst so right now. theres to many fighters out there who just look unstopple more than he does.

i couldnt name one person right now who can say honest in there heart they feel they can beat bj or silva.

look at fitch.. hes the #1 contender to fight bj and even he said "its not about wanting to fight him, i HAVE to fight, hes the master and the best in the world. i have to fight him to get to where i want to be. he then went on and on about how much he respects bj and his skill.

That story is so sad. I love the sport, but it uses up the athletes way quicker, and more brutally than even boxing, or trying to pitch your way into the major league. Over the course of two fights you could go from the next great thing to out on your butt. And I'm very much of the mind that most of these guys could use some counseling. Just watch a TUF episode.

POSTED: January 25, 2009 - 11:35 am

CATEGORIES: MMA

Andrei Arlovski lead official paydays for Affliction: Day of Reckoning, courtesy of figures released by the California State Athletic Commission. However, these salaries do not account for undisclosed bonuses, hence Fedor Emelianenko's relatively small financial compensation.

Emelianenko's official payday does not include a win bonus, while Arlovski would have pocketed an extra $250,000 had he claimed the WAMMA heavyweight title.

The second highest earner was Josh Barnett, who took home $500,000 with no bonus for his third-round victory over Gilbert Yvel. Meanwhile, Yvel made $30,000 in his losing effort.

Affliction: Day of Reckoning emanated from the Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. on January 24, 2009. Total disclosed fighter payroll was $3,308,000.

Here are the full salary figures provided by the CSAC:

Main Card:

* Fedor Emelianenko $300,000 (no win bonus) def. Andre Arlovski $1,500,000 (win bonus would have been $250,000)

* Josh Barnett $500,000 (no win bonus) def. Gilbert Yvel $30,000 (win bonus would have been $9,300)

* Vitor Belfort $200,000 (includes $80,000 win bonus) def. Matt Lindland $225,000 (win bonus would have been $75,000)

* Renato "Babalu" Sobral $90,000 (includes $30,000 win bonus) def. Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou $50,000 (win bonus would have been $50,000)

* Paul Buentello $90,000 (includes $20,000 win bonus) def. Kiril Sidelnikov $10,000 (win bonus would have been $25,000)

* Dan Lauzon $12,000 (no win bonus) def. Bobby Green $4,000 (win bonus would have been $4,000)

HDNet Undercard:

* Antonio Rogerio Nogueira $150,000 (includes $30,000 win bonus) def. Vladimir Matyushenko $50,000 (win bonus would have been $30,000)

* L.C. Davis $14,000 (includes $7,000 win bonus) def. Bao Quach $7,000 (win bonus would have been $6,000)

* Albert Rios $6,000 (includes $3,000 win bonus) def. Antonio Duarte $3,000 (win bonus would have been $2,000)

* Brett Cooper $10,000 (includes $5,000 win bonus) def. Patrick Speight $2,000 (win bonus would have been $3,000)

and Fedor is one bad man! heres the 36 second destruction of former UFC champ Tim 'the maniac' Sylvia

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fu...deoid=39064763

Sylvia & now Arlovski! that makes 2 former UFC champs! and if you ask me, i dont think Randy would make it past round 3 with Fedor & at this point, Brock wouldnt make it past round 1. give him a few more years befor he goes up against someone like Fedor. best match for Fedor right now, i think, is Frank Mir

I don't think we'll ever see Randy and Fedor. Randy's almost 50 and still has 2 fights left in the UFC, which he may even get out of. That whole mess was just put on so Dana wouldn't lose his champ to Affliction.
I say Randy fights one more time and they let him go.

And this whole "greasing" thing with GSP is such bullsh it. I've watched the fight again and while his cornerguy did use the same hand he applied vas. to his face to rub his back, there was no intentional greasing. Penn needs to stay in his weight class, train harder and learn strategy.

Oh, and taking a vacation 2 weeks before a major fight wasn't the best idea either.

Full UFC 94 Salaries, Fight Bonuses - St-Pierre Leads Heap
Ariel Shnerer
Feature Writer & Editor
POSTED: February 1, 2009 - 2:36 pm

Salary information has been released for 18 of the 20 competitors that fought at UFC 94 this past Saturday, courtesy of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre lead paydays with $400,000 for his fourth-round TKO win over Hawaiin lightweight king B.J. Penn, who took home $125,000 in defeat.

St-Pierre's total salary reflects a $200,000 base pay and a win bonus worth the same amount. Had Penn vanquished the French-Canadian champion, he would have earned an extra $250,000.

Unbeaten Brazilian karate wizard Lyoto Machida pocketed $185,000 for his first-round knockout of compatriot Thiago Silva. The figure reflects a $60,000 base pay, a $60,000 win bonus and a $65,000 "Knockout of the Night" bonus.

Other bonuses include $65,000 "Fight of the Night" honors going to Nathan Diaz and Clay Guida for their lightweight war, which was the first fight of the pay-per-view telecast. Guida won a highly competitive split decision to earn $105,000 total.

For the second time in three UFC shows, no "Submission of the Night" bonus was dished out as there was no submission finish on the card. But a second "Fight of the Night" bonus was allocated to the preliminary welterweight bout between Chris Wilson and John Howard, which Howard won via split decision. Howard made $71,000 for his UFC debut, while Wilson took home $80,000 in a losing effort.

Salary figures for undercard light heavyweight combatants Christian Wellisch and Jake O'Brien are not yet available.

Fighter payroll was $1,057,000, totaling less than the base pay of Andrei Arlovski for his first-round knockout loss to Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction: Day of Reckoning on January 24.

Salaries do not reflect undisclosed figures such as locker room bonuses, sponsorship earnings and additional compensation.

Listed below are the full paydays from UFC 94. Fighters are listed in order from highest paid to lowest.

* Georges St. Pierre: $400,000 ($200,000 to show plus $200,000 to win)

Penn, St-Pierre Camps Respond to Vaseline Allegations
Ariel Shnerer
Feature Writer & Editor
POSTED: February 2, 2009 - 10:41 am

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre's trainer Greg Jackson has responded to allegations of cheating in the aftermath of St-Pierre's dominating victory over B.J. Penn at UFC 94. In an interview with MMAWeekly.com, Jackson put to rest any buzz surrounding unfair tactics utilized in between rounds.

Phil Nurse, one of St-Pierre's cornermen, was reportedly performing a ritual taught by a member of St-Pierre's team that entails rubbing the fighter's back and tapping his chest as a means of accumulating energy. According to Jackson, the tactic also serves as a form of motivation.

“The controversy came because Phil Nurse also was putting Vaseline on Georges’ eyebrows,” Jackson said. “In between rounds, you always want to put on Vasoline on (a fighter’s face). So Phil Nurse put all the Vaseline on his face, so his hands might have had a miniscule amount left over from that, when he went around the side and rubbed a little point on his back, and tapped on his chest. At that point, somebody in the audience thought we were greasing George down, and ran over and told the commission that we were greasing his body down. The commission came in and said ‘you can’t grease him down,’ which didn’t work. They said ‘you’re putting Vaseline on his back,’ and Phil’s like, ‘oh, there might be a little on my fingers, but it wasn’t intentional at all, and of course they wiped it right off and it was gone, so it wasn’t a factor in the fight at all.”

Contrary to a report posted on this site yesterday, MMAWeekly.com suggests that no formal complaint has been filed with the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

In an interview with InsideFighting.com, Penn's coach Rudy Valentino said, "we just want to make sure it doesn't happen again to someone else. It is not good for the sport. For their camp to be busted doing something bad like that, to be busted doing it and then keep doing it after the referee had warned them... I respect Greg Jackson but to do something like that, his integrity has been compromised."

Jackson reportedly approached Valentino after the fight and apologized for the alleged illegal tactic.

Throughout the welterweight battle at UFC 94, St-Pierre managed to take Penn down and inflict damage inside his guard. However, Penn was unable to apply a successful high guard wherein he would wrap his legs around the head or shoulders of St-Pierre. A high guard would have in effect prevented the French-Canadian from posturing up and reigning down stronger blows. St-Pierre managed to pass his opponent's guard and get into side control where he was able to drop heavier strikes. The argument is that Vaseline would have made St-Pierre's back slippery and more difficult to grip, essentially allowing him to escape the high guard at will.

It is presently unknown if the UFC or the Nevada State Athletic Commission will discipline the champion or his cornermen. It is highly unlikely, however, that the decision will be overturned. Despite the allegations of cheating, St-Pierre was controlling the bout, both standing and on the ground. Consequently, Penn's camp will have a hard time arguing that Vaseline was a primary advantage that lead to the victory.

The Fight Network will have more on this post-fight controversy as it develops.

Strikeforce Inks Deal with Pro Elite
Fight Network Staff
General Posting
POSTED: February 5, 2009 - 4:25 pm

LOS ANGELES, CA. - In a transaction signaling the dawn of a new era in the world's fastest growing sport, world championship mixed martial arts (MMA) organization Strikeforce®, has acquired certain fighter contracts from ProElite, Inc, the parent company of former Strikeforce ® co-promoter, Elite Xtreme Combat (EliteXC).

Strikeforce® also acquired other specific assets of ProElite, including a library of EliteXC events, which were distributed live on either CBS or Showtime Networks.

"This is a tremendous development that will bolster the Strikeforce® roster and allow us to produce even more competitive matchups between top fighters," said Scott Coker, Founder and CEO of Strikeforce®. "Some of these athletes have been on the sidelines for a while now and are eagerly waiting to return to competition. We look forward to providing them with the opportunity to do so in the next few months."

Strikeforce® and EliteXC joined forces to deliver the first live SHOWTIME PPV® MMA event, "Shamrock vs. Baroni," on June 22, 2007. In the headlining contest, former UFC middleweight champion and MMA legend Frank Shamrock submitted knockout artist Phil "The New York Badass" Baroni in the second round, where upon Shamrock became the first Strikeforce® World Middleweight Champion.

On March 29, 2008, the two promotions collaborated once more to deliver a live telecast on SHOWTIME® featuring one of the sport's most anticipated showdowns - Shamrock versus undefeated world kickboxing champion Cung Le. In a battle that has since been proclaimed "Fight Of The Year" by critics, Le seized the Strikeforce® middleweight crown by pouring on a relentless offensive and fending off Shamrock's counter attacks before breaking the defending champion's arm with a hard roundhouse kick. Shamrock retired from the bout after the third round of a five round match.

A martial arts promoter for over 23 years, Coker has gained widespread acclaim among industry colleagues and the media, including Rolling Stone magazine, Yahoo! Sports, and The San Jose Mercury News. Coker elevated his 14-year-old Strikeforce® organization to become a major player in the World's fastest growing sport. Strikeforce's® inaugural MMA event hosted a capacity crowd of 18,265 at San Jose's HP Pavilion on March 10, 2006. The live gate figure also broke the then all-time record for attendance at an MMA event held in North America.

EliteXC burst onto the MMA scene with "Destiny," the first live, SHOWTIME®-televised MMA fight card in history, on February 10, 2007. Held at Southaven Mississippi's DeSoto Civic Center, the main event pitted Shamrock against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu expert, Renzo Gracie.

The promotion made history again by bringing, for the first time, a live MMA event to the CBS Television Network on May 31, 2008.

About Strikeforce:
Strikeforce® is a world-class mixed martial arts cage fight promotion which, on Friday, March 10, 2006, made history with its "Shamrock vs. Gracie" event, the first sanctioned mixed martial arts fight card in California state history. The star-studded extravaganza, which pitted legendary champion Frank Shamrock against Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt Cesar Gracie at San Jose's HP Pavilion, played host to a sold-out record crowd of 18,265. Since 1995, Strikeforce® has been the exclusive provider of martial arts programming for ESPN and after 12 years of success as a leading world championship kickboxing promotion, the company unveiled its mixed martial arts series with "Shamrock vs. Gracie." Since then, it has co-produced the first SHOWTIME PPV® mixed martial arts event in history with its world championship "Shamrock vs. Baroni" card on June 22,2007 followed by the first-ever mixed martial arts event at the world-famous Playboy Mansion on September 29, 2007.
